Western Nevada Science & Engineering Fair rules and the International Science and Engineering
Fair (Intel ISEF) rules that are found online at- http://www.societyforscience.org/isef
Students working with the Medical School and/or University of Nevada and their advisor must have all

or University. Students should contact the Regional Fair Scientific Review Committee Chairman, Dr.
Richard Simmonds, at rsimmonds@unr.edu for additional information.
*NOTE: Each Participant must complete and submit a High School Entry Form along with their Abstract
to ochsg@charter.net before midnight Saturday, February 20, 2016..
FORMS:
Only those projects completing the Western Nevada Regional Science & Engineering forms and the Intel
ISEF Forms will be allowed to compete in the Regional Science Fair.
ISEF forms can be obtained from their website- http://www.societyforscience.org/isef
All forms and rules must be completed and followed before the projects will be allowed to advance to the ISEF.
INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD (IRB)
All projects involving animals or humans require approval by your school IRB PRIOR to the start of any
experimentation and a copy must be sent to the Fair Director before Monday, February 1, 2016
PROJECTS WITH INCOMPLETE OR IMPROPER IRB WILL FAIL TO QUALIFY!
ALL REQUESTS FOR APPROVAL BY THE FAIR INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD and/or SCIENTIFIC
REVIEW COMMITTEE MUST BE INTO THE SCIENCE FAIR DIRECTOR BY Friday, December 18, 2016
(UNLESS SPECIAL CONSIDERATION IS OBTAINED FROM THE FAIR DIRECTOR).
ENTRY CATEGORIES:
The Intel ISEF has 22 research categories (team projects will now compete in the scientific category of
their research). To facilitate judging at the local level, we have established five (5) categories, which
embrace the 22 Intel ISEF categories. The WNRS&EF categories are:
ENGINEERING
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES (projects in Earth & Space Sciences)
LIFE SCIENCES (projects in Behavioral & Social Sciences, Medicine & Health, Microbiology, Zoology
& Botany)
PHYSICAL SCIENCES (projects in Biochemistry, Chemistry & Physics)
MATHEMATICS / COMPUTER SCIENCES
Students may enter as an INDIVIDUAL or a TEAM PROJECT (Maximum of three students). First and
Second Place Winners will be picked for each category; additional placings are at the discretion of the
judging panel. Being the only entrant, HOWEVER, does not necessarily qualify you as the First place
winner in any category. Once all the participants are ranked in their categories, a First and a Second place
Over-All Winner will be selected (only ONE of these can be a TEAM PROJECT).
The First and Second Place Over-all winners will be sent to ISEF. In the case of TEAM PROJECTS, the
sending a team is solely dependent on available funds. Over-all winners must submit a nonrefundable
competition entry fee of $100 per student attending by Monday, March 14, 2016 along with all final
paperwork not turned in during judging.
If for any reason the First and Second Over-all projects cannot advance to ISEF, the Regional Fair
Committee may select an additional project to send to ISEF.
PARTICIPANT INTERVIEWS:
All high school entrants must be available for interviews by the judges from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM on the
night of Wednesday, March 2, 2016. Participants must wait at the fair site; failure to participate in this
portion of the judging will eliminate the participant from final selection for a 1st Place or Over-all placing
at the Fair.
All winners will be announced the night of judging. All results are final. The WINNERS AND THEIR
TEACHERS are required to be at the awards ceremony on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at 5:30 pm.
