The Senate made Octavian a senator and asked his aid in the wars that had begun as a result of Caesar's assassination.

Defeated Antony's legions at Mutina in April of 43 BCE o Resulted in Octavian being given the rank and powers of a consul, and as Caesar's adopted heir became Gaius Julius

Marcus Lepidus on Nov. 27, 43 BCE and thus ruled

Africa, Sicily, and Sardinia.

Antony joined him in the common cause of defeating

Brutus, Cassius, and the party of liberators.

Had no intention of declaring himself a dictator.

Was no great military commander, relied on Agrippa to fight for him. Agrippa won the Battle of Actium for

Octavian.

Realized that by maintaining the Republican institutions and ensuring the prosperity of all Roman

Traditions, he could help Rome achieve its destined greatness.
