ANATOMY OF WRITING IN A YEARBOOK THIS LESSON WILL COVER FONT, HEADER, SUB-HEADER CAPTIONS, QUOTES, AND TEXT FONT Font The most common type of font is Serif and Sans serif. Serif is the most readable font. Serifs have tiny brackets at the end of the letter strokes. Sans serif doesn’t have serifs, (sans means without in French) The letter strokes have the same thickness throughout the letter. It is a modern look. SCRIPT VS DECORATIVE • Script font is a form of cursive. It have a lot of curves and flourishes. It looks like a love letter written by some fedora wearing neck-beard that lives near the ocean. These should only be used for headers. • Decorative font has flourishes that aren’t connected to cursive. They may have leaves, hearts, starts, snakes, or some other symbols connected to the font. They are very artistic These should only be used for headers. Should be 24+ point size. FONT IN THE YEARBOOK • The header font should be consistent through out the entire year book. It has to be the same font and size. Same with the sub headers, captions, and text. The caption size and type face should be consistent with all the captions throughout the book. • Yearbook designers NEVER use Justified Captions (middle centered) They use Align left. • AVOID ALL CAPS! ;) All caps is okay only for headers/titles. HEADER/SUBHEADER • A header is very similar to a title, it is like the title of your page. It has a biggest font size and is usually one word. (EX: Seniors, Hair, Football, etc) • A sub-header is a smaller header to a small paragraph or story. It is not a title and can be up to 3 words, can be a saying. (EX: A okay, Breaking the mold, Count us in, etc. ) CAPTION/QUOTE • A caption is a small summary of a photo or event. It is around 2 sentences or less. The caption should never begin with a name, but lead you into the person with fresh/exciting words. • Quotes are word to word documentations that a person said. They are great because they add student voice to the yearbook, giving it a personality. Quotes should only be used when something actually interesting has been said. A good quote should be memorable. • Yearbooks use captions and quotes the most in their pages. It is easier and quicker to create and they don’t take up as much space. We will focus on captions and quotes. TEXT/STORY/ARTICLE • If you want to expand on a event, you will write out an article about it under the caption/ quote. • No one reads anymore or cares to read anything too long. (28 percent of Americans never read a book after highschool) A big mistake people make in their Yearbooks is that their yearbook had more text than pictures. We will have more pictures than text. • Story should be 2 paragraphs max! • This year, each student will have to find and do an in depth interview of one interesting person in the school. • I will introduce this assignment later when we talk about the theme of the yearbook. ASSIGNMENT • Todays in class assignment will be creating captions. Captions will be the most used form of communication in the yearbook. • To create a caption, you will first need a photo and the information about the photo. • Never start a caption with a person’s name. A good caption will lead a reader into the subject and give them information. • Captions are twitter length. No more than 2 sentences Caption: Mittens is swimming. Why is this a bad caption?
