Go to NoodleTools through the Library Wiki.
Log on.
Select your U.S. History Working Bibliography.
BEFORE you do anything else with a source, make sure that you have ENTERED it into your
BIBLIOGRAPHY in NoodleBib!
Select NOTECARDS.
READ your first source.
When you’re ready to take notes, click on “New Notecard.”
CRITICAL: ONLY TAKE NOTES THAT SPECIFICALLY SUPPORT A SPECIFIC LINE
(REASON WHY) OF YOUR PRELIMINARY OUTLINE!!! Do NOT take notes for your
introduction or conclusion.
Enter the SOURCE! Click on the arrow and select the appropriate source.
Scroll down until you hit the PARAPHRASE BOX.
In other words, read the text and put the main ideas IN YOUR OWN WORDS!!!
Use PAST TENSE!
DIRECT QUOTATIONS.
There needs to be a SIGNIFICANT reason to quote a text. Generally, quote PRIMARY sources the
most. If the author of a secondary sources states something that is just SO profound that you feel that
can’t possibly paraphrase his or her ideas adequately, then quote a secondary source.
Generally, just quote 1 sentence. Keep large quotations, 3 to 7 sentences, to a minimum!
Be sure to COPY the quote EXACTLY and place QUOTATIONS MARKS around it!!!
After you quote a text, you MUST complete the PARAPHRASE BOX too. In a sentence,
SUMMARIZE the main point of the quote in your own words. Finally in the MY IDEAS BOX,
explain, in a sentence, how the quote supports one of your main reasons.
Highlight the text of your note. Under font family, select “Times New Roman.” Under font size, select
“3 (12pt).”
After you have entered the text of your note, scroll BACK to the TOP of the page.
In the TITLE BOX, SUMMARIZE the MAIN IDEA of your note in a few (about 1-5) words. Keep the
title BRIEF, but EACH title of EACH notecard must be UNIQUE!
Don’t worry about the URL—even for a database or web source.
If the source is a BOOK or an ARTICLE from a BOOK or ACADEMIC JOURNAL, enter the
number(s) of the page(s) that you used to create your paraphrased note.
If you’re using a database or web article, do NOT include page numbers.
When you are finished with this specific notecard, select SAVE.
Your notecard will appear on the NOTECARD TABLETOP in the NEW NOTECARD BOX.
