The “Hostile Audience” Speech
Your task:
The purpose of this speech is to persuade a hostile audience to accept your proposal. Ideally, you
want every person in the group to change his/her mind about the controversial topic that you
address.
Your format:
Use Monroe’s Motivated Sequence with the proper adaptations for a hostile audience.
1) Attention (Hook)
a. Grasp the audience’s attention!
2) Empathy
a. Acknowledge the audience’s views, validate and empathize
b. Establish common ground
3) Need
a. Make them see that there is a serious problem and that action must be taken
4) Refutation
a. Acknowledge counterarguments and one by one, explain why they aren’t valid
5) Satisfaction
a. Provide your solution to this problem and explain why it will work
6) Visualization
a. Positive Method: Provide a vision of all the wonderful things that will occur if the
audience adopts your proposal
b. Negative Method: Provide a vision of all the terrible things that will occur if the
audience does not adopt your proposal.
7) Action
a. Provide audience members with something concrete and immediate that they can do
to take action
8) Closer
Requirements:
- Your speech should be 2-4 minutes in length.
- This is an extemporaneous speech. Notecards will be collected.
Research:
- In order to strengthen the logos aspect of your speech, you will need to use five outside
sources as you research this speech. Two of these sources should be interviews with your
classmates. Research should be documented on NoodleTools.
