Student: Stephen Saravia
Professor: Sheehan
Course: EDU 316
Date: 10/28/13
Grade: 12
Topic: Supply and Demand
Content Area: Social Studies
Instructional Objective
Following a presentation, discussion on supply and demand as well as a literacy strategy
on the determinants of supply and demand, students will predict an outcome to a situation
based on what they have learned about supply and demand, citing at least the
determinants of either supply or demand.
Standards and Indicators
STATE STANDARDS ADDRESSED
State Key Idea Addressed: 12. E4 The United States Economic System
The choices of buyers and sellers in the marketplace determine supply and demand,
market prices, allocation of scarce resources, and the goods and services that are
produced.
State Conceptual Understanding Addressed: 12.E4.a The conditions of supply and
demand drive any capitalist system. Producers and consumers, influenced by these forces,
make choices whose outcomes determine the availability of products and services and
their prices.
Indicator:
 This will be evident when the students complete a statement strategy based on the
determinants of supply and demand.
NATIONAL STANDARDS ADDRESSED
Theme Addressed: #8 Creation, Expansion, and Interaction of Economic Systems
 Production, distribution, and consumption
 Scarcity of resources and the challenges of meeting wants and needs
 Supply/demand and the coordination of individual choices
 Economic systems
 Trade, interdependence, and globalization
 Role of government in the economy
 Personal finance
Indicator:
 This will be evident when the students state the determinants of supply and
demand that affect the price of pomegranate juice.
COMMON CORE STANDARDS ADDRESSED
Common Core State Standards for Writing: Text Types and Purposes Provide a
concluding statement or section that follows from or supports the argument presented.
Indicator:
 This will be evident when students write a paragraph on what they believe will
happen to the price of giants tickets after a big win, using what they have leaned
about supply and demand to come up with their answer.
SOCIAL STUDIES HABITS OF MIND ADDRESSED
Habits of Mind Addressed: Gathering, Using, and Interpreting Evidence
Make inferences and draw conclusions from evidence
Indicator:
 This will be evident when the students predict the outcome of a situation based on
their knowledge of supply and demand.
Motivation
The teacher will show the students a video on supply and demand that will explain supply
and demand in an engaging way. This will then lead into a discussion on blackberry
phones and IPhones, where I will relate the familiar into supply and demand.
Materials
 YouTube
 PowerPoint
 Determinants of supply and demand handout
 Strategy handout
 Homework handout
Strategies
Direct Instruction
This will be evident when the teacher provides an overview of supply and demand.
Video Clip
This will be evident when the students watch an engaging, concise video clip on supply
and demand.
Statement Strategy
This will be evident when students complete statement strategy documents on the
determinants of supply and demand.
Class Discussion
This will be evident when the students share their answers from the statement strategy
with the class.
Adaptations
 The student with poor listening comprehension I will read and re-read all
direction and expectations
 The student with vision impairment will receive documents that have larger texts.
 The English language learner will be provided with the power point and
documents with specific vocabulary highlighted and defined.
Differentiation of Instruction
 For the visual learner, the students will watch a video the covers the main ideas of
supply and demand.
 For the verbal/ linguistic learner, they will read a document that states the
determinants of supply and demand.
 For the intrapersonal learner the students will be answering the statement strategy
on their own.
 Tier One Learners will be given a printed out version of the PowerPoint, to assist
them with the strategy handout as well as the homework.
 Tier Two Learners will be given a printed out version of the PowerPoint to help
them with the homework.
 Tier Three Learners will complete the homework without any aides.
Developmental Procedures
The class will discuss supply and demand. Who here has a blackberry? An IPhone? Why
do you think there has been a change in the demand for these two different phones?
The students will discuss determinants of supply and demand. What tastes have changed
in mobile phones that have led to this switch in popularity? Why are the ticket for
Jaguars games cheap, but people still don’t go to the games? Why are the tickets for
Seahawks games expensive but their games are always sold out?
The students will complete a statement strategy. What has happened to the supply of
pomegranate drinks? Support for your argument? Using this pomegranate juice as our
class example, what other examples have you seen where supply and demand change?
What were the determinants of this change?
Assessment
 The teacher will evaluate the statement strategy completed by the students.
 The teacher will evaluate the students during a discussion on determinants of
supply and demand.
 The teacher will evaluate how they completed their homework the following day.
Independent Practice
 At home the students will answer a question related to supply and demand, using
what they have learned in class, and providing this evidence in their homework.
Follow-Up: Teacher Intervention and Academic Enrichment
Direct Teacher Intervention: The teacher will work with the student on
https://americanheritage.byu.edu/Pages/GamesandActivities/Supply-and-DemandInteractive-Chart.aspx to provide a better understanding of supply and demand.
Academic Enrichment: The student will find two recent articles on the Internet one that
features a determinant of supply effect on price of a good and the other that features a
determinant of demand effect on price of a good. The student will then summarize what
he learned.
