College Information Workshops: Counselors and our College/Career Specialist will be offering College Information Workshops on the following dates in Room 104 A **New Location** from 8:15 a.m. - 9:15 a.m. These seminars are a forum for parents to ask questions and learn more about graduation, college admissions, and postsecondary options. The dates of upcoming seminars are as follows: January 15 focus: registration questions *No seminar in February due to registration March 11 focus: registration information for incoming 9th grade parents**Updated Date** April 16 focus: preparation for 9-11th grade parents for college admissions May 21 focus: summer options Please email your students' counselor to RSVP for a specific date & to ask questions that you would like us to address in the seminar. Registration Timeline • February 6, 13, and 20: Students will participate in Friday activities during their advisory classes to prepare for selecting their courses. The focus will be on the student selecting a realistic schedule based on the student’s future goals. • Week of February 16th: Counselors visit all English classrooms to distribute registration materials and discuss the registration process/graduation/college requirements • February 23rd-March 17th: Counselors meet with each student individually to enter course requests/answer questions/make sure course prerequisites have been satisfied. This is done during the school day through their English class. *Counselors are unavailable for parent appointments during the registration window (Feb 16-Mar 17th) due to being in classrooms/meeting individually with students. • May: LAST OPPORTUNITY for students to make changes to their course requests. Students receive a print out of their course selections and have one week to request changes by submitting their course selection form to the office. Important Notes Regarding Registration: • AP/Honors/math/some science courses have grade prerequisites (SEMESTER 1 GRADES). Students will have a copy of prerequisites in their registration packet. Also on the counselor’s webpage. • Students will have a transcript attached to their registration packet which MUST stay attached throughout the registration process. • Registration page from 2014 with course sequence recommendations/4 year plan can be accessed on the counselor’s webpage. Will be updated as forms become available. • Students caught cheating or plagiarizing in an honors or AP subject will not be allowed to register for an AP/honors course in that subject area the following school year. • Students cannot “skip” levels in subject areas. Example: A student cannot skip from Spanish 1 to Spanish 3. • Outside courses are for enrichment purposes only and cannot be used to fulfil graduation requirements or to accelerate. • 12th grade is the only level that students can take 2 math or 2 science courses. Types of Financial Aid: •Grants: Free money that does not have to be paid back. They are usually awarded based on financial need. •Scholarships: Free money that does not have to be paid back. Awarded based on merit, a special skill or interest, or need.
