Electrical Safety GSA Advantage PPE
DRAFT Matrix of Electrical Safety Protective Clothing and GSA Availability
Reference: NFPA 70E-2012, 130.7(C)(16), Protective Clothing and PPE
July 25, 2012
Introduction
NFPA 70E-2012, 130.7: “Employees working in areas where electrical hazards are present shall
be provided with and shall use protective equipment that is designed and constructed for the
particular part of the body to be protected and for the work to be performed. The PPE
requirements are intended to protect a person from arc flash and shock hazards. While some
situations could result in burns to the skin, even with the protection selected, burn injury
should be reduced and survivable. Due to the explosive effect of some arc events, physical
trauma injuries could occur. The PPE requirements of 130.7 do not address protection against
physical trauma other than the thermal effects of an arc flash.”
Note: Electrical safety arc flash PPE protection works as a “system” and PPE systems from a
single distributor should be considered. Speak with product manufacturers and/or distributors
to confirm ASTM Standard compliance and to request third party testing documentation for
standard compliance.

Note 3: “Arc rating is defined in NFPA 70E Article 100 and can be either the arc thermal performance
value (ATPV) or energy of break open threshold (Ebt). ATPV is defined in ASTM F 1959, Standard Test
Method for Determining the Arc Thermal Performance Value of Materials for Clothing as the incident
energy on a material to cause the onset of a second degree burn injury. Ebt is defined in ASTM F 1959 as
the incident energy with a 50% probability of break-open. Arc rating is reported as ATPV or Ebt whichever
is the lower value.”

NOTE: “Arc flash coveralls are usually the most economical type of arc flash clothing when full body
protection is required. However, they are not as simple to put on and take off as some other garment
styles, such as a jacket and bib overalls. An arc-flash suit with a jacket and bib overalls is preferred by
most users for its ease of use and versatility. It is easy to quickly put on for a quick task requiring arc
flash PPE. If it needs to be worn for a long time, you could easily open the jacket or remove it completely
(during a break from work) to cool off. Bib pants also offer rather good airflow to the legs, compared to
other choices such as the coverall, waist length pants, or leggings.” Reference:
