Summer Reading Log

Dear Parent/Guardian:
Do you know that reading during the summer can keep your child a step or more ahead?
Summer can be full of good times and fun memories, and reading needs to be included in
this! Research shows that kids experience learning loss when they don’t read during the
summer. Reading, like any skill, requires practice. Without practice, reading skills
weaken. Summer reading helps children maintain their skill level or even make gains so that
they can start the new school year with a better understanding of language and the world
around them. All the while, he/she can discover the joy of reading! The more kids like to read, the more they will
read.
To encourage the rising 1st and 2nd graders to keep reading over the summer, we are inviting them to join the MPS
Page-Turner Summer Book Club. To become a member, your child will read at least 15 books over the summer and
turn in the reading log on the back when he/she returns in the fall. There is no charge to participate and there will
be no meetings during the summer months. The students who complete the Book Club requirements will be invited
to an exclusive party during the school day in September where they will enjoy ice cream and we will announce the
child who read the most over the summer.
Have a great summer and happy reading!
