Arts and culture
Historic Downtown Marion: Downtown Marion is listed
on the National Register of Historic Places; downtown
Marion was established in 1842. Commercial
development began in 1870 on 50 acres donated by
John Carson. The Marion Depot is an 1860’s building
recently renovated and is the oldest surviving depot on
the Western Rail Line. Other interesting structures
include four churches built between 1882 and 1935.
Cost: To rent the Depot: $200 deposit and $200 for the
day. Total of $400.

Marion Mountain Music: Open to all musicians, no
scheduled performers. Outdoors (weather permitting),

McDowell Arts Council Association (MACA): On
February 28th, 1972, a group of 52 local residents
created the MACA organization. These people were all

proud of their local, artistic heritage, and wanted to
share this legacy while promoting local artists and
inspiring cultural life in McDowell county. 41 years later,
the arts council continues to encourage local artists
providing gallery space, a retail shop, teaching
opportunities, and theater space for the performing
arts. Private lessons taught at MACA: Beginning Piano,
Guitar, Vocal Lessons, and Wood Turning Lessons.
Cost: Depending on program/class offered. Contact
MACA for more information. Possible donations to
participants.

Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail (OVNHT):
The OVNHT follows the Revolutionary war route of
Patriot militia men from Virginia, today’s eastern
Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia
to the battle of Kings Mountain, South Carolina, site of
the Kings Mountain National Military Park. The OVNHT
is part of the National Trails System. While there are
hiking segments, the primary public access is by car over
the commemorative motor route. The only trail marked
portion is access from Old Hwy. 221 Linville Mountain
Road.

Overmountain Victory Trail Encampment: Part of the
National Historic Trail marking March from Abingdon,

Virginia to Kings Mountain, South Carolina during the
Revolutionary War. Encampment features period
clothing and historical re-enactments near Marion.

Bear Creek Marina: This is a unique piece of property
that offers a variety of services including boat slips, full
service marine/general store, tent and RV camping, plus
their equestrian trails are coming soon. Rent an
RV/cabin on site. Outdoor grill serves lunch and dinner.
Live music on the weekends.

Buck Creek Campground and Driving Range: Peaceful
and natural setting with a half mile of frontage on Buck
Creek. Alongside the stream is a large green meadow
which is surrounded by a natural forest. Easy access to
the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mt. Mitchell, Biltmore House,
Linville Falls, and many other attractions.
Cost: 30 amp full hook-up $30-$36 (regular rate) and
$36-$40(holiday rate). 50 amp full hook-up. $33-$39
(regular rate) and $39-$43 (holiday rate). All rates
include two adults and two children under 18. Extra

persons overnight are $3 each and maximum of 6
persons per site. Pay regular rate for six nights and get
the seventh for free.
For Campers: 74 full hook-up sites for campers. Shady
sites on Buck Creek. Large pull-thru’s with 50 amp.
Clean bathhouse with hot showers. New laundry
facilities. Cable TV. RV storage. Swimming, tubing, and
fishing in the creek.
For Golfers: Large, level driving range. State-of-the-art
lighting system. Well marked at 50 yard intervals. Mats
or grass tees with convenient bag stands. Lessons
available by appointment.

Catawba Falls Campground: Quiet and family oriented
campground with the sole purpose of providing you a
safe and inexpensive vacation in a quiet and relaxing
mountain setting. Offers Wi-Fi, fishing, clean bathhouse,
playground, manicure and pedicure service, and ice
cream. There is a small fishing pond and a clear stocked
mountain river. Walking distance to Catawba Falls. RV,
tent camping, and cabin rental.

Clinchfield Neighborhood Park: Constructed in 2012 on
10 acres of land, the park contains a walking trail, a
picnic shelter and tables, a basketball court, and
playground equipment.

Eastfield Neighborhood Park: Completed in the
summer of 2010, the park includes a walking trail,
basketball court, picnic shelter and tables, swing set,
and jungle gym.

Jellystone Park: 64 acres of fun! Jellystone provides the
perfect base camp to explore North Carolina
Mountains, 30 minutes from Linville Caverns, Linville
Falls, and Blue Ridge Parkway. Yogi Bear, Boo Boo, and
the staff at Jellystone provide daily activities, and fun
and games. Yogi Bear and Boo Boo make appearances
daily. They also have a lighting fast Super Duper Triple
Looper Waterslide, a pool, and a kiddie pool. There is
access to a pond where you can fish for large and small
mouth bass, catfish, and carp. No fishing license
required. Kayak, canoe, and paddle boat rentals are also
available. There are 18 holes of putt putt and you can
also do a little gem mining. Arcade alley, sandbox,
horseshoe pits, corn hole, badminton, basketball court,
hiking trails and volleyball are other options you have to
choose from on where you spend your time at
Jellystone. Camp sites available: Tent, Big Rig, Creekfront, Lake-view, Lake-front, Premium, G1, G2, G3, G4,
Deluxe Cabin View, and Pop-Tent.

Lake James State Park: One of North Carolinas most
popular state parks for a variety of activities. Swimming,
sunbathing, or enjoy a quiet picnic along the shore.
Boat, water-ski, or fish. Take a walk and enjoy the forest
wildflowers and wildlife along the park trails. You can
camp also. There are 20 backpack campsites located
150-300 years from the parking lot. Two of those sites
are reserved for persons with disabilities. Each campsite
provides a fire pit, picnic table, and tent space.
Approximately every five sites a part, a water faucet is
located, and a wash house with hot shower is accessible
near the parking lot. Camp sites are available March 1stNovember 30th.

Marion Community Building Park: Even though it is
small, the area is full of facilities to serve every age
group and activity level. It has tennis and basketball
courts, picnic shelters and tables, a large playground
and a splash pad. Restrooms and parking are available.
The park is popular and was renovated in 2001.

Hours: 7 days a week on a first come first serve basis.

McDowell County Recreation Department Facility:
Skate park, an outdoor swimming pool, and the center
itself which houses a gym and multipurpose room.

Moose Lodge: Just uphill from Lake James, the Moose
Lodge resides. Marion, despite its location, is now the
largest Lodge in N.C with 1,200 men and 830 women on
its rolls. The Moose Lodge provides a campground with
lakefront access, tennis courts, picnic area alongside the
shore, volley ball net, and a playground. Just up from
the beach you will find a building that serves food and
also provides different forms of entertainment.

Mountain Paradise Campground: Swimming pool,
waterslide, summer recreation, miniature golf (putt
putt), and seasonal campground.

Old Fort Bradley Park: Public Park with picnic tables,
benches, and garden areas. Keep an eye open for local
events including musical performance in the gazebo!
Bradley Park is conveniently across from the Old Fort
Depot and Arrowhead.

Children’s Services Network: Region 9 Child Care
Resource and Referral Agency providing information to
families and the community on childcare, professional
development opportunities for early childhood
professionals, and technical assistance to child care
facilities. Parents may call the parent resource line for
information about all public and private child care
options within the county. Offers an Early Childhood
Resource Center with access to laminating, die cuts, and
educational kits and resources for checkout.

Corpening Memorial YMCA School Age Care and
Summer Camp: SEE YMCA/Camps.
Division of Child Development (DCD): Monitors and
licenses ALL child care programs in North Carolina. Key
responsibility is to assure a safe and healthy child care
environment in licensed child care centers and family
child care homes in NC. Also provides information to
parents about choosing quality child care.

Glenwood Family Resource Center: Offers a bridge
between families and Glenwood Elementary. Prepares
children to enter school ready to learn. Prepares
parents for sending children to Kindergarten. Part-day
preschool classes for two, three, four, and five year
olds, field trips and free child care for stay-at-home
moms and grandparents. Free parent resources.

Families: Administers Smart Start funds to local
agencies to help provide child care, health, and family

in order to prepare children to enter Kindergarten

McDowell County Schools Head Start: Head Start, Early
Head Start, and preschool programs designed to meet
the educational, health, physical, nutritional, and social
needs of children birth-five years old. Children of

McSMILES Part-Day Preschool Program: Supports
families by creating access to high quality early
childhood education programs. This free, par-time,
mobile preschool program is based in school buses that
have been fitted with the essential play centers to

Services
CC4C: A voluntary home visitation program for families
of young children who have, or are at risk for, medical
or developmental conditions. Staffed by Public Health
Nurses. Need referral.

Family, Infant, and Preschool Programs(FIPP): The
Family, Infant, and Preschool Programs (FIPP) is a statefunded program that provides such services as weekly
home visits, pregnancy information and planning,
weight and health monitoring, and parenting and child
development support. A nurse and licensed
psychological associate provide these services for any
mothers with mental health, substance abuse, and risk
for pre-maturity for duration of birth through 1 year
after birth. Nurses have different specialty areas to
assist all areas in. There are many other services that
can be provided to improve parent and child
interactions and child mental health. Can see children
from birth to through the age of 5.

Good Samaritan Clinic of McDowell County: The Good
Samaritan Clinic of McDowell County was established to
provide care to those who are uninsured and cannot
afford care. It is a part-time, Christian based, primary
care clinic staffed by dedicated volunteers.

Healthy Smiles Dental Fund: McDowell County
Partnership for Children and Families. This fund
provides dental assistance for eligible children ages
birth-18years of age who have a dental “need”. Child
must not qualify for Medicaid or Health Choice.
Transportation funds are available for the child. Contact
partnership for application.
Cost: Successful applicants must be willing to make a
$10 co-payment to the dentist.

Innovation: The Innovation (formerly CAP) service is a
special Medicaid community care funding source
designed to give persons with
intellectual/developmental disabilities a cost-effective
alternative to care in an intermediate care facility. The
goal is to allow individuals to return to and/or live in the
community with as much independence as possible. The
wide array of services and supports are designed to
recognize the dignity of each individual and to enhance
the quality of life, allowing each person to maximize
independence, productivity, and talent according to
his/her preferences.

John Thompson Center for Men, McDowell Mission
Ministries: Shelter clients are assigned a case manager
and must comply with all goals set. Clients are all
provided with person items, laundry access,
medications assistance, clothing, and transportation to
appointments and work.

Cost: No fees are required to enter the shelter. When a
client finds employment there is a weekly sliding scale
charged. There is a fee for transportation to and from
work.

McDowell County Department of Social Services:
McDowell County DSS determines eligibility for
Medicaid, food and nutrition services, Work First
(welfare), subsidized childcare, and medical transport. It
oversees child and adult protective services by
investigating cases of abuse and neglect, locates absent
parent and establishes and enforces court orders with
regard to child support. It also offers medication
management. Health Check: Provides access to health
care for children up to the age of 21 that qualify for
Medicaid.

McDowell County Health Department: Offers a variety
of family health services including: child health clinic for

More Weigh Less program, health screenings, children’s
and adults immunizations, smoking cessation, women’s
preventive health screenings, family planning services
for women of child bearing age, pregnancy prevention
services, emergency contraception, Maternal Care
Coordination, referrals to OB doctors for pregnant
women, post-partum home visits for mother and New
Born Screening home visit for infants, Breast and
Cervical Cancer Screening and referrals for Women
(BCCCP), Wise Woman services for women if eligible for

Preschool Dental Outreach Program: Program provides
children ages 6 months to 5 years with a limited oral
exam. A dental assistant can assist parents in finding a
dentist and can assist with identifying financial
resources. Also provides education to the community.

Safe Harbor Grief Program for Children and Youth
Hospice of McDowell County: The program objective is
to assist children/youth and their families in working
through difficult grief and loss process. Children grieve
over family deaths, divorce, or painful transitions in
their family just as profoundly as adults, although in
different ways. It is crucial that their thoughts and
feelings not be dismissed. This program offers an
opportunity for them to express grief in appropriate
ways in order to promote healing. The program is
offered in the grief support room in the Hospice of
McDowell County new center of Hope at county
schools, or in the home.

The McDowell Hospital: The mission of McDowell
Hospital is to serve the healthcare needs of our
community, giving comprehensive, cost-effective,

The Open Door to Health: Assisting McDowell County
with a variety of programs such as vocational
counseling, job seeking, resume writing, nutritional

Foothills Industries of McDowell County: Adult
Developmental Vocational Program (ADVP) is a program
that provides organized developmental activities
designed to prepare the individual to live and work as
independently as possible. ADVP offers a diverse variety
of specific services and activities. These include
vocational evaluation and training, paid work, personal
and community living skills development, adult basic
education and long-term support. The amount of time
devoted to these areas varies considerably depending
on the needs of those being served. In order to be
eligible for ADVP, an individual must have a diagnosed
developmental disability and must be 16 years of age or
older.

a messaging campaign that encourages adult learners in
McDowell County (those 25-44+ who may not have

chances of finding new employment. The first step the
GNO messaging campaign suggests is to connect with
an area Success Coach by calling 2-1-1. The Success
Coach is a person who will work with the individual to

goal of "Operation Backpack" is to outfit all
underprivileged children in McDowell County Schools
with a new backpack and school supplies. Although the
majority of the supplies are distributed a few weeks
before they return to school from summer break,
"Operation Backpack" is a year-round event. Supplies
given to students include, but are not limited to,
Backpacks, 3 ring binders, notebook paper, spiral

Project Rise: Project Rise provides interpersonal skill
building services to the students of McDowell County.
These intervention services are to assist youth in

Andrews Geyser: A gravity fed geyser located in a
private park just outside down town Old Fort, on Mill
Creek Road Drive through the rail road tunnel, park will
be on the right with a NC Civil War Trail sign. Picnic

Old Fort Arrowhead Monument: In the center of Old
Fort, built in 1930 this hand chiseled granite monument
served to honor the peace finally achieved between the
pioneer settlers and the Native Americans. At the
unveiling, over 6,000 people attended including chiefs
from both the Catawba and Cherokee tribes. These two
tribes had never smoked a pipe of peace together until
that day. More historical information is at the Mountain
Gateway Museum and the Old Fort Railroad Station and
Visitor Center located adjacent to the arrowhead in the
depot.

Arrowhead Artists and Artisans League (A3L): The
Arrowhead Artists and Artisans League (A3L), is an Old
Fort based nonprofit organization dedicated to
promoting the arts and artists in and around the Old
Fort area, preserving the arts of the area for future

about the local arts and artists, and giving local artists
and artisans opportunity to display their work for

Carson House: The Carson House is a historic house
located in Marion, North Carolina. Built in 1793 this
house serves as a museum of history now. Three of the
Carson men were members of the State Legislature, one
of whom was a signer of the Texas Declaration of
Independence and also the 1st Secretary of State of the
Republic. The Carson house was also the home of Col.
John Carson, and served as the McDowell County
courthouse at the county's inception. Carson House
maintains a unique collection of research materials and
books, along with dozens of family histories in its
library. The Mary M. Greenlee Genealogical Research
and History Room have been a part of the house since
the early 1970s, and is constantly adding to its archives.
Thousands of family historians have found valuable

its status as the gateway to the Smoky Mountains

exhibits, original tools, signal lights, furniture, and signs
are housed in the historic Old Fort Depot building, built

Mountain Glory Festival: A one day festival that is held
the second Saturday of October each year, and is the
largest annual event drawing tens of thousands of
people to historic downtown Marion. It is a celebration

Catawba Falls: About 70’ high. 3 mile round trip.
Moderate. Strenuous climb to upper falls. WARNING:
Wet rocks are very slippery and people fall to serious
injuries or deaths from waterfalls every year. If you visit
Catawba Falls, be very careful. Keep children under
constant supervision.

Curtis Creek Campground: U.S Forest Service
Recreation Area with over 10,000 acres I the Pisgah
National Forest including Mackey Mountain, a black
bear sanctuary. The primary road connects to the Blue
Ridge Parkway. Tent camping and RV sites are available
plus hiking trails and one waterfall. Curtis Creek
Recreation Area was the first Parcel of land purchased
as a result of the Weeks Act in 1911. Two Civil
Conservation Corps camps were located here. Two trout
streams, Curtis Creek, and Newberry Creek with
handicapped access available on Curtis Creek.

Joseph McDowell Historical Catawba Greenway: In
September 2010, the city of Marion opened Phase 1 of
the Joseph McDowell Historical Catawba Greenway. The
first part of development includes a 1 mile corridor
extending from US Highway 70. It includes a wildlife
observation platform, fishing pier, and picnic are to

enjoy. Future phases of the Greenway will extend to the
McDowell House on US Highway 70 West and beyond. A
canoe launch is also being developed.
Directions: US Highway 70 West off of Sam Philips Drive
just west of Lowe’s.
Kitsuma Peak: Short hike, 20 minute trail. Breathtaking
views and unusual Carolina hemlocks.
Directions: Take I-40 West to Ridgecrest exit. Turn onto
Old US 70, road is blocked. Park at road end.
Lead Mine Gap: 5 miles. Moderate. Mixed forest
environment, long range views.
Directions: HWY 70 to Curtis Creek Road, east of Old
Fort. Trailhead approximately 8.5 miles. Trail ends at
Hickory Branch Trail, after 2 miles trail rejoins Curtis
Creek Road at lower point.
Little Buck Creek: 5.8 miles. Moderate to strenuous.
Excellent views of Marion, Lake Tahoma, and Black
Mountain range.
Directions: From US 70, west of Marion, turn right onto
NC HWY 80, passing Lake Tahoma on right.
Linville Gorge: The “Grand Canyon of the East”.
Primitive recreation in a wild and isolated terrain.
Strenuous hiking, back packing, rock climbing, and
fishing for native trout. Stretches of virgin forest, rare
and endangered species, assortment of wild game and
non-game species. Located in the Pisgah National Forest
near Linville Falls.

Mackey Mountain: 6 miles. Moderate to strenuous. The
trail is located in a bear sanctuary. Take appropriate
precautions on trail. Spectacular views. Varying lengths
and skill levels. Two segments of this 700-mile route are
in McDowell County. The Craggy Pinnacle segment
follows the Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville past Buck
Creek Gap at NC 80 to Little Switzerland. The route
includes a 14 mile steep downhill grade. The Brown
Mountain Lights segment continues on the Parkway to
Linville Falls at the northern tip of McDowell County and
onto the foothills are via NC 181. Route includes several
gentle descents and easy climbs.
Directions: US 70, east of Old Fort to Curtis Creek road,
turning left. Trailhead is 9 miles at entrance of Sugar
Cove Road.
Newberry Creek: 5 miles. Easy to moderate. Scenic trail
ends at Blue Ridge Parkway.
Directions: Take US 70 West to Curtis Creek turning
right. Left at Newberry Creek Road (FS 482-A). Go 4
miles to the end. Trailhead begins at the end of the
road.
Peavine Trail: In September 2010, the city of Marion
acquired from Norfolk Southern Railway 33 acres of the
old Pea.
Directions: Peavine Trail, Marion, NC 28752.
Point Lookout Trail: 6.32 miles. Moderate. Avoid train
tracks and respect private property boundaries. Parking
at Old Fort Picnic Grounds, the Depot, and Andrews
Geyser Park.

US Forest Service Recreation: See a beautiful scenery
hiking, biking, or walking the waterfall trail at the US
Forest Service Recreation.
Directions: I40 east bound to exit 72. At the end of the
ramp turn left driving across the bridge. At the stop
sign, turn left until you reach the next stop sign at HWY
70. Drive straight across and the road becomes Curtis
Creek Road. Drive approximately 4-5 miles and the road
will change to dirt as you enter the recreation area and
parking.
Woodlawn Fitness Trail: 7 stations, 2 exercises per
station on a 1/4mile jogging path.

STDS and HIV/AIDS
People who use drugs and alcohol often take risks that
danger their health and the health of others. One of the
most harmful risks is that of engaging in risky sexual
activities. Many people abandon safe sex practices
when they are intoxicated, even if they do protect
themselves when sober. Unprotected sex can result in a
Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD).
Sexually Transmitted Diseases are serious, sometimes
painful and can cause a lot of damage. Some STDS only
infect you sexual and reproductive organs. Others cause
general body infection and possibly death (HIV/AIDS).
Sometimes you can have an STD with no other
symptoms. Some STDS cannot be cured. But most STDS
can be cured if you get treated promptly. Locally you
can receive confidential testing and treatment at the
McDowell County Health Department.
American Social Health Association (ASHA): ASHA is
dedicated to improving the health of individuals,
families, and communities with an emphasis on sexual
health and a focus on preventing sexually transmitted
diseases and their harmful consequences.

Safe Surrender Law: NC’s Safe Surrender Law allows an
overwhelmed mother to surrender her baby to a
responsible adult and walk away. The baby will be
adopted. A baby up to 7 days old may be placed with
any responsible adult. The baby must be unharmed.

baby safe and warm and call 911 or McDowell County
Department of Social Services. It is legal and
anonymous. Awareness of this law is essential if it is to

SUWS of the Carolinas/Phoenix Outdoor: SUWS is the
longest running wilderness therapy program in the
United States. SUWS, which can be inpatient or
outpatient, offers therapeutic wilderness programs and
academic support for adolescents ages 10-17 with a
focus on clinical intervention and assessment. The
wilderness program uses the outdoors as an alternative
to conventional treatment environments, while
engaging students using traditional therapeutic

confidence, problem-solving skills and tangible success,
with an emphasis on positive peer influence and
leadership. Parents are given hands-on experience to
