Commercial development began in 1870 on 50 acres donated by John Carson. The Marion Depot is an 1860’s building recently renovated and is the oldest surviving depot on the Western Rail Line. Other interesting structures include four churches built between 1882 and 1935. Cost: To rent the Depot: $200 deposit and $200 for the day. Total of $400. McDowell Arts Council Association (MACA): On February 28th, 1972, a group of 52 local residents created the MACA organization. These people were all ~3~ proud of their local, artistic heritage, and wanted to share this legacy while promoting local artists and inspiring cultural life in McDowell county. 41 years later, the arts council continues to encourage local artists providing gallery space, a retail shop, teaching opportunities, and theater space for the performing arts. Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail (OVNHT): The OVNHT follows the Revolutionary war route of Patriot militia men from Virginia, today’s eastern Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia to the battle of Kings Mountain, South Carolina, site of the Kings Mountain National Military Park. The OVNHT is part of the National Trails System. While there are hiking segments, the primary public access is by car over the commemorative motor route. Overmountain Victory Trail Encampment: Part of the National Historic Trail marking March from Abingdon, ~4~ Virginia to Kings Mountain, South Carolina during the Revolutionary War. Bear Creek Marina: This is a unique piece of property that offers a variety of services including boat slips, full service marine/general store, tent and RV camping, plus their equestrian trails are coming soon. Alongside the stream is a large green meadow which is surrounded by a natural forest. Easy access to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mt. Mitchell, Biltmore House, Linville Falls, and many other attractions. Cost: 30 amp full hook-up $30-$36 (regular rate) and $36-$40(holiday rate). 50 amp full hook-up. $33-$39 (regular rate) and $39-$43 (holiday rate). Catawba Falls Campground: Quiet and family oriented campground with the sole purpose of providing you a safe and inexpensive vacation in a quiet and relaxing mountain setting. Jellystone provides the perfect base camp to explore North Carolina Mountains, 30 minutes from Linville Caverns, Linville Falls, and Blue Ridge Parkway. Yogi Bear, Boo Boo, and the staff at Jellystone provide daily activities, and fun and games. Yogi Bear and Boo Boo make appearances daily. They also have a lighting fast Super Duper Triple Looper Waterslide, a pool, and a kiddie pool. There is access to a pond where you can fish for large and small mouth bass, catfish, and carp. No fishing license required. Kayak, canoe, and paddle boat rentals are also available. There are 18 holes of putt putt and you can also do a little gem mining. Arcade alley, sandbox, horseshoe pits, corn hole, badminton, basketball court, hiking trails and volleyball are other options you have to choose from on where you spend your time at Jellystone. Swimming, sunbathing, or enjoy a quiet picnic along the shore. Boat, water-ski, or fish. Take a walk and enjoy the forest wildflowers and wildlife along the park trails. You can camp also. There are 20 backpack campsites located 150-300 years from the parking lot. Two of those sites are reserved for persons with disabilities. Each campsite provides a fire pit, picnic table, and tent space. Approximately every five sites a part, a water faucet is located, and a wash house with hot shower is accessible near the parking lot. Phone: 828.584.7728. ~ 11 ~ Marion Community Building Park: Even though it is small, the area is full of facilities to serve every age group and activity level. It has tennis and basketball courts, picnic shelters and tables, a large playground and a splash pad. Restrooms and parking are available. The park is popular and was renovated in 2001. Cost: Free. Marion, despite its location, is now the largest Lodge in N.C with 1,200 men and 830 women on its rolls. The Moose Lodge provides a campground with lakefront access, tennis courts, picnic area alongside the shore, volley ball net, and a playground. Just up from the beach you will find a building that serves food and also provides different forms of entertainment. Cost: Membership fee: $30 women and $65 men. Family, Infant, and Preschool Programs(FIPP): The Family, Infant, and Preschool Programs (FIPP) is a statefunded program that provides such services as weekly home visits, pregnancy information and planning, weight and health monitoring, and parenting and child development support. A nurse and licensed psychological associate provide these services for any mothers with mental health, substance abuse, and risk for pre-maturity for duration of birth through 1 year after birth. Nurses have different specialty areas to assist all areas in. There are many other services that can be provided to improve parent and child interactions and child mental health. This fund provides dental assistance for eligible children ages birth-18years of age who have a dental “need”. Child must not qualify for Medicaid or Health Choice. When a client finds employment there is a weekly sliding scale charged. There is a fee for transportation to and from work. Ext 330. ~ 22 ~ Safe Harbor Grief Program for Children and Youth Hospice of McDowell County: The program objective is to assist children/youth and their families in working through difficult grief and loss process. Children grieve over family deaths, divorce, or painful transitions in their family just as profoundly as adults, although in different ways. It is crucial that their thoughts and feelings not be dismissed. This program offers an opportunity for them to express grief in appropriate ways in order to promote healing. Adolescent Parenting Program: The Adolescent Parenting Program is a State Adolescent Parenting funded program of the McDowell County Schools that provides teen parents 17 and under with intense case management through monthly or bi-monthly peer group meetings. Adult Basic Skills Education, McDowell Technical Community College: ABE is a program, within the Basic Skills Department, which provides instruction for adults who need to build skills in reading, writing, speaking, problem-solving, or computation to further their education or gain better life skills. The Carson house was also the home of Col. John Carson, and served as the McDowell County courthouse at the county's inception. Carson House maintains a unique collection of research materials and books, along with dozens of family histories in its library. The Mary M. Curtis Creek Campground: U.S Forest Service Recreation Area with over 10,000 acres I the Pisgah National Forest including Mackey Mountain, a black bear sanctuary. Curtis Creek Recreation Area was the first Parcel of land purchased as a result of the Weeks Act in 1911. Two Civil Conservation Corps camps were located here. Phone: 828.652.2144. Joseph McDowell Historical Catawba Greenway: In September 2010, the city of Marion opened Phase 1 of the Joseph McDowell Historical Catawba Greenway. The first part of development includes a 1 mile corridor extending from US Highway 70. It includes a wildlife observation platform, fishing pier, and picnic are to ~ 73 ~ enjoy. Future phases of the Greenway will extend to the McDowell House on US Highway 70 West and beyond. A canoe launch is also being developed. Directions: HWY 70 to Curtis Creek Road, east of Old Fort. Trailhead approximately 8.5 miles. Trail ends at Hickory Branch Trail, after 2 miles trail rejoins Curtis Creek Road at lower point. Little Buck Creek: 5.8 miles. Moderate to strenuous. Excellent views of Marion, Lake Tahoma, and Black Mountain range. Directions: From US 70, west of Marion, turn right onto NC HWY 80, passing Lake Tahoma on right. Linville Gorge: The “Grand Canyon of the East”. Primitive recreation in a wild and isolated terrain. Strenuous hiking, back packing, rock climbing, and fishing for native trout. Stretches of virgin forest, rare and endangered species, assortment of wild game and non-game species. Located in the Pisgah National Forest near Linville Falls. Directions: Highways 221 and 183. ~ 74 ~ Mackey Mountain: 6 miles. Moderate to strenuous. The trail is located in a bear sanctuary. Take appropriate precautions on trail. Spectacular views. Varying lengths and skill levels. Two segments of this 700-mile route are in McDowell County. The Craggy Pinnacle segment follows the Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville past Buck Creek Gap at NC 80 to Little Switzerland. The route includes a 14 mile steep downhill grade. The Brown Mountain Lights segment continues on the Parkway to Linville Falls at the northern tip of McDowell County and onto the foothills are via NC 181. Route includes several gentle descents and easy climbs. Directions: US 70, east of Old Fort to Curtis Creek road, turning left. Trailhead is 9 miles at entrance of Sugar Cove Road. Newberry Creek: 5 miles. Easy to moderate. Scenic trail ends at Blue Ridge Parkway. Directions: Take US 70 West to Curtis Creek turning right. Left at Newberry Creek Road (FS 482-A). Go 4 miles to the end. Trailhead begins at the end of the road. Peavine Trail: In September 2010, the city of Marion acquired from Norfolk Southern Railway 33 acres of the old Pea. Directions: Peavine Trail, Marion, NC 28752. Point Lookout Trail: 6.32 miles. Moderate. Avoid train tracks and respect private property boundaries. Parking at Old Fort Picnic Grounds, the Depot, and Andrews Geyser Park. ~ 75 ~ US Forest Service Recreation: See a beautiful scenery hiking, biking, or walking the waterfall trail at the US Forest Service Recreation. Directions: I40 east bound to exit 72. At the end of the ramp turn left driving across the bridge. At the stop sign, turn left until you reach the next stop sign at HWY 70. Drive straight across and the road becomes Curtis Creek Road. Drive approximately 4-5 miles and the road will change to dirt as you enter the recreation area and parking. Woodlawn Fitness Trail: 7 stations, 2 exercises per station on a 1/4mile jogging path. One of the most harmful risks is that of engaging in risky sexual activities. Many people abandon safe sex practices when they are intoxicated, even if they do protect themselves when sober. Unprotected sex can result in a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD). Sexually Transmitted Diseases are serious, sometimes painful and can cause a lot of damage. Some STDS only infect you sexual and reproductive organs. Others cause general body infection and possibly death (HIV/AIDS). Sometimes you can have an STD with no other symptoms. Some STDS cannot be cured. But most STDS can be cured if you get treated promptly. Locally you can receive confidential testing and treatment at the McDowell County Health Department.
