Diet Analysis Assignment
Directions: Use your 7 day food diary to write a five paragraph reflection of your diet.
First, determine if you have an overall healthy diet. In order to have a healthy diet you must
adhere to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010, released on January 31, 2011, emphasize three major
goals for Americans:
 Balance calories with physical activity to manage weight
 Consume more of certain foods and nutrients such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fatfree and low-fat dairy products, and seafood
 Consume fewer foods with sodium (salt), saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, added
sugars, and refined grain
and
ChooseMyPlate.gov provides practical information to individuals, health professionals, nutrition
educators, and the food industry to help consumers build healthier diets with resources and tools
for dietary assessment, nutrition education, and other user-friendly nutrition information. As
Americans are experiencing epidemic rates of overweight and obesity, the online resources and
tools can empower people to make healthier food choices for themselves, their families, and their
children.
Ask yourself these questions…
Do I eat enough vegetables?
Do I eat a variety of vegetables?
Do I eat enough fruit?
Do I eat too much junk food?
How is my sodium intake?
Do I eat mostly whole grains?
Do I drink 3 glasses of milk (or similar) a day?
Do I get enough protein?
Do I drink too much soda?
Do I get an hour of exercise a day?
Write a thoughtful paper with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion.
I.
Introduction- Explain the importance of the MyPlate and the dietary guidelines. Discuss
what we have talked about in class and/or what you learned from the MyPlate Computer
Assignment. Decide whether you have a poor diet or a good diet, whether you get enough sleep,
take in enough water, and your fitness regimen. List aspects of your diet that is poor or that is
very good. State how you are going to improve your diet or continue to have a good diet.
II.
III.
Body- Discuss your aspects. Why did you do poorly? (or why did you do well) Why is it
important to do well? (For instance, why does the body need vegetables?) What goals are
you going to make in order to improve your diet? Even people with good food habits can
make goals to improve.
Conclusion- Restate your declaration on whether you have a good diet or a bad diet.
Discuss the overall implications of how people eat and exercise. Why should we worry
about what we put in our body? Why should someone strive to stay fit? How does it
affect us as people, as a community, and as a society? What did you learn from this
lesson?
This assignment will count as a TEST GRADE. I expect excellent effort. I want thoughtful
sentences that show you have really put some effort into this assignment.
