trading posts all the way to Japan!
 Over time, European merchants and
governments created new economic systems to
meet the consumer demands for new products
from around the world.
The Industrial Revolution in the 1700s enabled

Industry and Infrastructure
 Europe was the birthplace of the Industrial
Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries.
 The most populous countries (U.K., France,
and Germany) are the major industrial
powers.
 A well-educated workforce uses the
continent’s mineral resources efficiently in
modern factories.
 The modern factories are linked together by wellorganized transportation (infrastructure)

 There is a large difference in the economies
and industrial development of Eastern and
Western European countries that dates back
to communist times.
 Many eastern European countries were
poorly managed under the Soviet communist
government in the 20th century, leading to
problems with infrastructure, industry, and
pollution in these areas.
In recent decades, Europe has taken important steps
toward unity
