Pastor’s Place January 2016

Hello and God bless you. Here at Sharon Baptist Church we have had a wonderful end of November and a great December. I first want to thank you for your amazing support of

Brother Mark Caluag who visited our Church. Your generosity passed my expectations and you truly helped the ministry of the Gospel in the Philippines. I also wanted to thank you all for your cards, gifts and support during this Christmas season. I am truly thankful for you all.

We had many very good events happen this December. Our choir was part of the

King William Emergency Ministries fundraiser and they did an amazing job. That night the event raised around $3000 dollars to help those in need in our county.

Our children performed a wonderful play call “Somebody’s Coming to Our House.”

The children did a great job and they did their best for the Lord. I want to thank those who helped work with the children on this play and I wanted to thank the parents of the children for their support of the play. It was a very fun night.

On Sunday, December 20 we had a great cantata during our Sunday Morning

Service. I want to thank the choir for performing this cantata. You all did a wonderful job.

That Sunday we also had a wonderful time caroling.

On December 24 th we had a Candle Light Service that called our hearts closer to the reason for Christmas, the birth of the one and only savior, Jesus Christ. I pray you were blessed by that service.

I hope you all had a great Christmas and I hope your hearts are drawn closer to

Jesus because of it.

I did want to announce that I am having my office hours on Mondays from 9am to about 2pm and Wednesday nights from 3pm-6pm. I am always happy to meet by appointment as well. These hours of course are subject to change due to emergency.

Now we are entering 2016. This year I pray that we each strive to our purpose of reaching out to our community; loving those in the body of Christ and seeking God with everything we are.

As Daniel purposed in his heart (Daniel 1:8) to be what God would have him to be and walk uprightly; each believer must now do the same. Our world seems to be in chaos.

Our nation is not what it once was but our God does not change. (Hebrews 13:8; James

1:17) In uncertain and “interesting” times we must seek the one who will take care of us and never leave us. In turn, we must dedicate ourselves to His service and seek this year to make a difference in our Church, neighborhoods and families. I understand this is a challenge, it is for me as well but is not the love and sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ deserving of this response? (Romans 12:1-2)

Again, I pray all of you will be blessed. See you again soon for fellowship, service and worship.

Sincerely your brother in Christ, Pastor James

Multi-media Committee

Lynne Buker reported on behalf of Chris White (Chairperson)

Installation of the new sound system by Bowling Green electronics has taken place throughout October and into the first part of November. Speakers were mounted to both sides of the front posts in the sanctuary and at the back wall in the upper lofts. Microphones were installed over hanging the pulpit area.

Amplifiers were built into shelves in the baptismal closet. Lines to these and all components were run from the attic. Audio cables were run down into the nursery and fellowship rooms. Three display monitors were hung in the sanctuary.

At this reporting we have used the system for three worship services and one other event. The service on the 8 th

including displays for song lyrics and scripture passages during the sermon. The computer used for this was not ours and belonged to the installer. The multimedia committee is still in discussion and trials to use our own laptop. The displays for the fellowship hall are ready for use.

We have used a personal camera and tri-pod to begin video recording our weekly sermons. CD copies made from this will be placed in the welcome packages given to visitors. We will try to upload this to our website as well.

We attempted to use our own wireless microphones for our concert night, but they were low powered not on transmission bands we are permitted to use and the system incurred more feedback. We have spoken to our church family and initiated a plan to replace them through private donations. We will continue to use our cabled connected microphones for most events.

We are in discussion with the sanctuary committee to arrange for the banners to be put up.

We have received good feedback on both the audio and video use. We are aware of some of the lighting; shadows and reflection issues caused by the windows and chandeliers and are working on it. We are asking for feedback and comments to be made to any member of the multimedia committee members who will be meeting sometime in December to review our status.

The old main speakers were brought down and dismantled by Steve Payne and Phil Dorrier, who also repaired the holes in the ceiling of the sanctuary. The old sound board will be stored in the loft.

First Quarter Business Meeting – continued

Training for this system will be announced shortly in both the weekly bulletin and monthly newsletter.

We are encouraging all members to participate to learn about its use and capabilities.

We have received many generous donations toward paying for the system. We will still be working on plans to do a few fund raisers in 2016.

At this time we have no new motions to bring forward.

We sincerely appreciate the support given by the church with this project.

Music Ministry Committee

Chairperson, Lynne Buker reported the following:

During this last quarter, we provided special music for our worship service using seven groups from our church. We now have a total of twelve groups and/or soloists available.

At present there is a new entourage practicing which includes our Pastor’s wife, Jennifer and her violin.

Jennifer shared her great musical talent recently at our hosting of our annual women’s ministry luncheon.

Although we have not been able to form a children’s choir this year, we have three groups of children who are working on special music for our services.

We were not able to follow through to provide music for our annual picnic, but we did provide an evening program of music.

With the installation of the new sound system in the sanctuary, the committee is working to provide weekly hymnal music for the displays. We are assisting our sanctuary choir to become familiar with using the displays. It is our hope that we can use these displays to share our children’s Christmas program with music and visual display.

We will be working with Alyce to provide our praise choruses to the displays during worship service.

Currently the sanctuary choir and other groups will be participating with our Emergency Ministries

Program in December. The sanctuary choir will provide music for our Thanksgiving and Christmas services. We are working with Pastor Sevon to provide music for our Candle Light Service.

We are in discussion with several groups and people to provide another Sunday evening concert event during the first quarter of the New Year.

We continue to be blessed with great pianists and organist for our regular worship service.

We are still working on cleaning and clearing out old music in the choir room. We contacted Dover

Association to see if some of this can be donated or reused by other churches. If you know of someone or group who could use some of this music please let a member of the committee know.

We appreciate the support our church shows us to keep our music ministry growing.

Chairperson, Narissa Dougherty reported the following:

The committee has met twice and will meet again in December revitalizing this committee to reach out into our community. The committee is made up of five new members: Narissa, Pastor James, Melissa

Barber, Bettie Masini, and Jim Milam. They have reviewed previous outreaches and bringing up new ideas. Melissa Barber is putting together a list of visitors with addresses for visitation.

The Outreach Committee had a table set up at the Fall Festival and handed out church wrist bands and

Bibles. Two families have since visited our church on Sunday through this outreach.

They are considering church business cards to hand out and also church decals.

MUSICALLY SPEAKING

January 2015

It was a month of celebration on so many levels! God has continued to bless our music ministry with the addition of our new audio AND video enhancements. We appreciate the efforts of Pastor Sevon and Chris and Sandra White to ‘tackle’ getting scripture and verse to our displays. As 2016 approaches we look to find that perfect balance that will be pleasing to the church.

Our travels to participate with the Emergency ministries concert were very successful.

Our sanctuary choir and our newly formed Ladies Quartet performed three selections.

This concert raised about $3000.00 to put into reserve for needy families in the community. Always good to see what and how churches in the area are ‘celebrating’ the season in song; we hope y ou didn’t miss out on the opportunity!

Happily, once again, Bobbie gave us a great Christmas play and the chance to see our kids show us how the nativity might have been seen through the eyes of stable animals in this year’s “Someone is Coming to Our House” Christmas play! Still rolling his eyes over the idea of ‘talking to the animals’, Pastor Sevon played himself…talking to Brock

Bohr as Benni the cow and a rather strikingly ‘pink’ Kaylee Chappell, as Gabby the flamingo!

A ‘ troupe ’ of 16 strong - children and adults laid tracks to take our Holiday songs to the neighborhood! We ‘caroled’ with Janet Bartgis, Frances S chutt, Judy Fox, Bubba,

Elizabeth and grandkids, Harry and Linda McCormack, The McGeorge’s (thanks for the cookies!), Clyde Mays and Christine and Steve Colvin.

During our regular worship services this month, we were treated to the wonderful talents of Roger and Rachel Shumate giving us an upbeat and warm message, “Vic’try in Jesus.” Later in the month saw our Junior Children’s Quartet, echo sing a beautiful song about “Christmas is Coming”. Jane Burch’s “Cherub Kids” added to the season with their Christmas musical selections!

AND what can you say to a ‘mature’ Sharon Sanctuary Choir delivering a

‘contemporary’ cantata filled with almost te arful moments from soloists Roger Burket,

Grace Madren and Suzanne Buckingham? AND narration, eloquently spoken about the

‘now’ of our message and the ‘everlasting’ of HIS promise to us, by Molly Longest? A most joyful Hallelujah! Amen! Thank you to all for the hard work, including the great effort by the multimedia to give us great sound, light and displays!

Concluding our season will be our candlelight service featuring a duet of Jennifer

Sevon on violin and Suzanne Buckingham on piano. We expect (and are excited about!) ‘new mom!’ Emily McKinley sharing special music with us on the 27 th !

Our creativity (and technology) has again soared this year as we attempted to heighten our worship service in celebration of His word to us; we are humbled and blessed by

His direction in providing such a wonderful music ministry! Merry Christmas!

SOUNDING OFF WITH THE MULTIMEDIA COMMITTEE

Chris White – chairman

We’ve had overwhelming positive response from the congregation about the installation of our new sound system and video enhancements. We met and received advice from

Frank about computer programs available and are moving slowly to understand how best to add this into our programs of worship. All require the graciousness of time and training for us. New members to our committee have been observing and/or taking the manuals home to better understand the system. We look forward to your ideas and feedback, so don’t hesitate to ask or check with us. We have come to realize the system and its’ ‘many’ variable possibilities are seemingly ‘endless’…it’s going to be tedious but exciting to determine how we can improve upon services each week!

Well, we did give those old wireless mikes a try and they really didn’t give us the results we felt we needed! Thanks to all who participated in our campaign to replace them, we’ve been successfully able to get those! We had several big contributions and are thankful for all your help in supporting us!

Our big ‘next’ step is the mass training on SATURDAY, JANUARY 9 TH AT 9AM! We are asking all our members to come out, as well as any of our church family who would just like to know more about this new system. It has already become apparent to us that its’ going to take more than one set of hands to manage on Sunday mornings. The basics ARE simple to operate, but the overall coordination will really take more than one to do it efficiently and smoothly.

We are also at work, planning for a “Spring” concert to begin

‘paying the bill’ on this system. If you are interested i n being part…or just want to show us your talent, we’d love to hear from you!

We hope our efforts to ‘wade in’ to add to the holiday season met with your approval! We ask for continued prayers and contributions as we step into ‘deeper’ waters to learn abou t our new system! Happy New Year!

Dear Sharon friends, thank you for your greetings and cards during the past month.

We appreciate each one of you for your loving spirit and support. As most of you know, we will be moving in the next few weeks to Shacklefords, VA, right next door to our daughter Nancy and her family. We look forward to coming back to Sharon as often as possible. I am supply preaching at some area churches, and Suzanne is singing and playing the piano at area churches as well. We both wish you all a Christ-blessed New

Year! Lytle and Suzanne Buckingham.

Youth in the News January 2015

We pray that everyone has had a wonderful Christmas and New Year with their family and friends, celebrating our Savior and looking for ways to know Him better in 2016 !

A quick look back to 2015: The Bethlehem Walk in Goochland was fantastic! We highly recommend everyone (not just youth) try to attend next year! The sets are permanent structures and they are very detailed. There are so many people involved in the acting and working of this tour; it is encouraging to witness their passion for it! A word of advice for next year – plan to be there at least 30 minutes before the start of the tour! It is a very popular event!

We want to send out a huge THANKS to all of you that have hired out the youth for work! We have 9 teens with money on their account and that is such a wonderful start towards a mission.

Looking Ahead

For the past two years, usually starting in February, we have done a study on True Love-Purity and

Manhood. We would like to continue that, but also have times for the teens to get together with others in the church to form relationships. It is important that they build strong relationships within the church as they grow so that when the opposition comes their way, they know where to go and who to go to.

As long as the weather permits, we will still have basketball about once a month for anyone who wants to play! Pastor James said he can play in the rain and even below freezing, just not ice. :)
