The project builds on the work in phase one in which twelve parents gained
knowledge about STEM in daily life through a series of classes (4, 2 hours per
class) while their children ages 2-5 were also participating in STEM focused
activities in the Early Learning Center. The following is an outline of the
general work plan by trimester (parents referred to as Parent Peer Teacher
after STEM training)

Grantee Response
During the first phase of work, what have been your greatest learnings that
you would want to share with the early learning field around STEM?
While phase one was initially intended to be a collaboration with another
youth serving organization focused on classical music also interested in
increasing there parent engagement, for a variety of reason did not work out.
1) 1 of 12 parent knew what the letters STEM represented
2) When parents learned what the letters stood for they expressed
considerable dis-ease because these topics require education they didn't
have.
3) Connecting STEM with daily life activities in the home opened their door to
enthusiasm, motivation and confidence to learn.
4) Another key factor was the parent and child response to STEM knowledge
and learning each step of the way served to motivate the teaching staff to
take the participants to the next level of learning. Participants were
empowered by learning and teaching staff were empowered to try more.
4) Parents learned to use open ended question with their children which
enhanced their engagement with their children
5) Parents felt confident teaching other parents and children age 2-12 about
STEM concepts and activities
6) Parents with STEM training and knowledge more effective with children in
the "Kid Zone" than other volunteers without STEM learning
7) Having the freedom allowed in phase one to shift our focus was very
helpful and turned out to be a successful opportunity to build a solid
foundation for phase two.

Two significant STEM problems in our community are lack of STEM
understanding among families served and low education levels which
contribute to an underlying lack of parent confidence. La Casa's service
approach is unique in the community. The peer teaching model is the
foundation of our work. This provides opportunities to meet the people
where they are with an appropriate cultural understanding. Services are
offered in Spanish and scheduled when participants are most available
including evenings and week-ends. There is a high expectation that parents

teacher/coach guidance. Two other sequences that followed included a
community event and a family field trip to the Pacific Science Center. During
the community event PPTs set up and staffed the "Kid Zone" which included
six stations over two hundred children rotated through with PPTs facilitating
child learning. The trip to the Pacific Science Center served to deepen parent
learning by allowing them to see even broader applications of STEM in the
world. Phase one set the stage for greater independent parent and child
learning and laid a framework on which to build phase two.
