Profile
Remco Krikken (1975) is an experienced network specialist with a background in system
integration. He has a broad knowledge and experience in design, realisation and
implementation of large complex network infrastructures. Remco is Cisco CCNP and
CCDP certified.
Due to his broad knowledge and experience, Remco is able to oversee the whole part, also
outside his profession. Because of this, Remco is able to design complete infrastructures
using several technologies.
Although his interests go primarily into technology, Remco also has coordinating and

For the agency BPR (Personal Records Database and Travel
Documents Agency), which is part of the Ministry of Interior and
Kingdom Relations (BZK), a new twin-datacentre has been
implemented by DICTU based on Cisco Nexus. A High Level
Design and a Low Level Design has been written for the
network discipline. Next the network was also implemented.
This was done in the role of lead engineer.
I was also responsible for the daily coordination of the other
team engineers during absence of the lead architect. The team
consisted of several disciplines.

Ministry of Defence – MIVD
This position primarily consists of managing existing networks
and cryptographic connections. Besides this, I worked in
projects that needed design and implementation of network and
firewall infrastructures. Also I proactively did some network
architecture activities, which consist of restructuring the network
to reach performance optimizations. This role as a network
architect was very much appreciated by the customer. Finally a
small voice implementation was realized based on Cisco CME.

Apart from daily administration one of the tasks was to deploy a
new Internet infrastructure. For this a Global Design and a
Detail Design were written. The design, based on Juniper
ISG1000 firewalls, source based routing and BGP, was also
Implemented by Remco. Next he also coordinated and
performed the migration.
Technologies like Juniper DX Application Acceleration, NSM
and Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB) were used.

Primary task was to adminster the network of the ministry. This
network build upon Cisco 6509 core switches, was mostly
concentrated on the head office location. Several branch offices
were connected using EVPN connections provided by KPN.
Due to his advance in knowledge and experience in relation to
his colleagues, Remco fulfilled the role of team leader.
Remco was involved in several projects. One of them was
designing some parts of the network infrastructure. This part
was a separated network which needed to be managed. This
network had been integrated in the current infrastructure.
An important design Remco made, was a design for a complete
new network infrastructure for the ministry. This design, based
on the Cisco Campus model, was presented to the
management as an alternative to a Collapsed Core design
which was made by an external party.

Also Remco has designed and implemented a new Internet
Security Infrastructure. A new layer of defence was introduced
using Checkpoint VPN-1 VSX. This firewall software provides
the option to create more virtual firewalls on single clustered
hardware.
Other products like Packeteer and Infoblox have also been
used. Using this infrastructure the ministry was able to fulfil the
role of service provider for other government parties.

Nachenius Tjeenk en Co formerly was property of ABN AMRO.
As of July 1st, 2005 it is the property of BNP Paribas. During
this period the migration of the network was prepared and
performed. Besides connecting the networks using a leased
line, Remco has configured the Cisco routers, PIX firewall and
the Microsoft ISA Proxy Server.

Pilot Consolidation external connections
Within the network department of ING Bank a pilot was started
to migrate connections with external parties to a central
Building Block for External Connections (ECBB). Remco
performed the role of network engineer to write a technical
detail design of a pilot connection (connection to Euronext) and
collecting information about processes, procedures and
dependencies within the ING Bank.

The police of Amsterdam owns their own network (LAN/WAN
based on Cisco 65xx/35xx) containing private fiber connections,
framerelay, etc. which are administered by themselves using
HP Openview, Ciscoworks 2000 and Cisco ACS.
Remco was as a network specialist responsible for:
1. Designing a new infrastructure and phase-out old equipment
like Newbridge WAN routers. This design was based on a hub
and spoke topology.
2. Improving the administration processes. Remco developed a
presentation layer on top of the existing tools. (Webbased –
Sun, sh/perl, SNMP). Besides this he developed active
components to better monitor the infrastructure.

Didacticum
Didacticum is a specialist in providing IT trainings in networking,
infrastructures and platforms. Remco was as network specialist
responsible for:
1. Designing, coordinating and building the new central
infrastructure of Didacticum. This contained:
a. Implementing the new server room.
b. Realising a remote access solution using VPN and secure
wireless IPSec VPN solutions. Microsoft ISA server was used
in this case.
c. Designing and implementing the Internet connection
infrastructure using firewalls. These firewalls were build upon
RedHat Linux.
2. Administering the Didacticum infrastructure; This
infrastructure consisted of several Cisco 55xx Catalyst
Switches.
3. Supporting trainers;
4. Performing a network audit at Masterfood to prepare the
realisation of a new network. This network consisted of 3COM
switches which needed to be migrated to a Cisco environment.
