Shopping in Brighton and Hove 2016
Brighton has shops to suit all tastes and budgets so it is worth exploring all the city has to
offer. This guide is only intended as an introduction to shopping in Brighton and Hove. All
details are correct as of 19.01.16
Main Supermarkets
These are the main supermarkets in Brighton and Hove. They are all large in size and have a
wide range of food available (fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, canned food, drinks, dried
food, sweets, frozen food). They also have a range of non-food items available (kitchen
items, cleaning products, some electrical items, some clothing, and some bedding).
They all have competitive pricing, but generally Tesco and Asda are the cheapest with the
widest range of goods. Aldi and Lidl are also popular with students as they offer very good
value items due to their simpler shop displays.
Most larger supermarkets allow you to order your shopping online and have it delivered.
They can deliver to your house in Brighton or to your accommodation on campus. There is
a charge for delivery. If you would like to order your shopping online and have it delivered,
compare prices of, for example, Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Aldi and Morrisons.
Please note that supermarkets now charge a minimum of 5p per plastic carrier bag, so
remember to bring your own.

Markets
Although the range of food is smaller, it is often cheaper or higher quality and more ethical
to shop at local markets. Markets are also a good opportunity to try local specialties and
many traders have free samples!

Tuesday Market - Every Tuesday there is an outdoor market near Falmer House selling fresh
fruit and vegetables, books, cakes, clothes, jewellery, dried goods, posters and more!

Homeware on campus:
New items: New students living in University accommodation can purchase a kitchen pack
for approximately £32. This pack contains a tea towel, cereal bowl, mug, glass, large plate,
saucepan and lid, frying pan, spatula, knife, fork, teaspoon, dessert spoon, wooden spoon,
can-opener and sharp knife. Students living in University accommodation can also purchase
a bedding pack for approximately £35 which includes a single flat sheet, duvet and duvet
cover, pillow and pillow cover. Both packs provide new items, not second-hand, and will be
yours to take with you at the end of the year.

Used items: The University of Sussex Students' Union runs a ‘free shop’ in Falmer House.
The free shop stocks unwanted items from other Sussex students such as kitchen items,
books, stationary, clothes, shoes and much more! Everything is free and students can help
