Soliloquy, Monologue, and Aside
• A soliloquy is a literary device often used in drama whereby a
character relates his or her thoughts and feelings without addressing
any of the other characters.[1] Soliloquy is distinct from monologue
and aside.
– To "soliloquise" can mean to recite a soliloquy or to talk to
oneself.
• A monologue (or monolog) is an extended uninterrupted speech
by a character... The character may be speaking his or her thoughts
aloud, directly addressing another character, or speaking to the
audience, especially the former.
• An aside is a dramatic device in which a character speaks to the
audience…The audience is to realize that the character's speech is
unheard by the other characters on stage. It may be addressed to
the audience expressly (in character or out) or represent an
unspoken thought. An aside is usually a brief comment, rather than
a speech, such as a monologue or soliloquy.
Journal: Paraphrase/Summary
• You and your partner will be assigned one
of the extended speeches from the play
(monologue or soliloquy).
• Go online, find and print a more
contemporary translation.
• Using that version of the speech, write a 510 sentence summary, highlighting the
important details of the speech.
