This feeling is created by the continual tension existing between my current worldview and my scholarship; while aspects of my worldview both drive and guide my studies, the learning process also forces me to constantly reevaluate my outlook. My Christian beliefs, for example, encourage me to develop my God-given intelligence, but studies of Darwinism have also caused me to question my church-bred conceptions about origins of life. I might begin to study American history out of a sense of patriotism, but if my study includes a reading of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, I may conclude it with shame over white America’s treatment of Native Americans. So even as my worldview pushes me to learn, new discoveries frequently force me to revise my perspective. This painful process of seeking knowledge often becomes easier in community. When I am in a community of scholars, I am surrounded by people on the same journey as I, who are braving the same stormy waters and perhaps have learned some tricks of navigation that I have not yet discovered. Therefore, the most important thing that I bring to XXXXXXX community is a willingness to participate in and listen to the dialogue already going on. • Click to edit Master text styles • Second level Personal Introduction 2 In this document, I’m opening the locker in which I’ve kept a log of my journey, and some mementos.
