Silvestri Music Scholarship 2016-17
The Silvestri Music Scholarship offers to an outstanding young musician, of Romanian
nationality, the opportunity to spend one academic year at the Erskine Stewart's Melville
Schools in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Silvestri Music Scholarship has been in existence at the
Erskine Stewart's Melville Schools for 13 years. The scholarship provides a unique opportunity
not only to develop and broaden musical training, but also to improve English language skills
and to develop an understanding of another European academic and musical culture. The
financial terms are fully inclusive, and cover tuition fees, accommodation, flights to and from
Romania, and normal expenditure on musical materials. Many former Silvestri Scholars have
gone on to study at the Royal Scottish Conservatoire or at other British Conservatoires, and
are pursuing musical careers in the UK and beyond.
The applicant should be 16 or 17 years old, and would typically enrol into the fifth year of
school, the last year but one in the Scottish secondary education system. He or she should
have a good command of written and spoken English, and would expect to follow the same
academic courses as other pupils at the school, taking “Higher” level courses in four or five
subjects. He or she would receive music tuition on two instruments, and would take a leading
part in the musical life of the school, singing in choir, playing in the orchestra where
appropriate, and taking part in chamber music. Previous Silvestri scholars have performed as
concerto soloists with school ensembles at the Usher Hall and St Mary’s Cathedral in
Edinburgh and have toured with school groups to Rome and Spain. It is expected that similar
opportunities will be available to the scholar for 2016-17. The scholar would live in the
boarding house at school throughout school term, and would return home for the Christmas
and Easter holidays.

An application should be made using the form below. This should be accompanied by a video
recording of musical performance, submitted electronically, as well as an academic and musical
reference, and a personal statement, written by the applicant in English. Applications should
be received by 26 February 2016. A shortlist will be drawn up of applicants, who will be
brought to Edinburgh for an audition and interview in April 2016. The successful applicant will
be notified immediately, and the scholarship will be taken up from August 2016 until June
2017.
