Introduction

About the Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi

Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

On Saturday, March 22nd, 1919, thirteen men, in the offices of Dr.

Moses E. Morton and Dr. J. Gregory at 1721 St. Antoine Street, brought into existence the third alumni chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Many of these men, having been initiated into the fraternity at the

University of Michigan, saw a need for Detroit area Alpha men to continue to serve their community and their fraternity after college days had swiftly passed. These esteemed men were:

 Bro. John H. Alexander

 Bro. Charles H. Campbell

 Bro. Ulysses S. Carey

 Bro. Elmer J. Cheeks

Bro. Parker B. Gamble

Bro. Cornelius L. Henderson

Bro. James L. Henderson

Bro. Lindsay Johnson

Bro. Charles H. Mahoney

Bro. Moses E. Morton

Bro. Cecil L. Rowlette

Bro. Charles A. Roxborough

Bro. Stephen D. Sparks

A glut of Alpha men rising to participate caused the meeting place to be moved to the Russell House, and later to the Knights of Pythias Hall on

Adams and Brush Street. As membership continued to swell, some of the brothers recognized the inadequacy of these meeting places and suggested that Alpha be housed in more suitable quarters. The response was terrific and as a result on May 15, 1939 our present quarters at 293 Eliot St. were purchased.

Alpha Brotherhood Breakfast Forum (October 2009, January 2010 and

April 2010)

The Alpha Breakfast forums were created to bring brothers together to discuss issues that are important to every member of our dear fraternity.

Each breakfast focuses on different topics - Business, Ethics, Finance,

Economics, Health, Politics, and Education. These forums are held four

times a year at Greater New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in

Detroit, Michigan.

The purpose for the Alpha Breakfast Forum is to bridge relations between the different generations of Alpha in the Detroit area. Our chapter is made up of all types of brothers who are at the beginning, middle or end point of their life’s journey which include careers, family or life work and Alpha. The breakfast is a tool of reclamation to the overall fraternity, chapter and brotherhood. The breakfast serves as an informal conduit to connect brothers by providing information on specific topics that will enrich those who attend on a more personal level than what may be gleaned through other resources.

Membership Intake Process (Fall 2009)

The Gamma Lambda Chapter conducted membership intake in the Fall of

2009. The chapter conducted Risk Management Certification training for sponsors and chapter members, and led Leadership Weekend activities and Membership Weekend activities during the designated intake window.

Chapter Past President Bro. Kenneth Jordan led the Ritual Training that took place at the conclusion of the weekend in Flint, Michigan. Gamma

Lambda initiated 10 new members. These 10 men are of strong ethics, courage and commitment to their family, the community and to Alpha.

National Founders Day Observance at the Historic Alpha House

(December 2009)

With over 80 brothers in attendance, Gamma Lambda had a wonderful

National Founders Day. The celebration consisted of a stimulating reenactment of the early days of becoming a fraternity by the neophytes, reflections by brothers 5, 15, 20 and over 25 years, and a presentation by

Soror Dara Munson, (president and CEO of Big Brothers and Big Sisters

Detroit). It was a festive time for all as we remembered our Jewels and the legacy on which we stand.

Gamma Lambda Chapter Founders’ Day Banquet (March 2010)

One of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Gamma Lambda Chapter's most anticipated annual events is our Founders’ Day celebration. Held in the

spring, this event celebrates the chartering of Gamma Lambda Chapter in

1919. This year’s event was also a salute to our senior brothers and their

Alpha commitment. Brothers with 25- and 50-year milestones were recognized. Other brothers were also recognized for their service to the chapter and the community at large.

Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights Groundbreaking Ceremony

(May 2010)

One of our prominent members, the Honorable Damon J. Keith, was honored at a groundbreaking ceremony for the Damon J. Keith Center for

Civil Rights at Wayne State University Law School in May 2010. The

Center honors the life and legacy of Judge Keith by carrying out his visualization for civil rights. The Keith Center, which is scheduled to open in Fall 2010, will have active programs of legal studies and will promote community engagement. An exhibit area featuring Judge Keith’s life and career and focusing on civil rights will serve as a reception area for the law school. The Gamma Lambda Chapter also plans to honor Bro. Keith this fall at a private brunch for brothers in the chapter and around the country.

Alpha Health Day (June 2010)

Under the leadership of Bro. Mack Hugh Sullivan, Jr., M.D., this event provided an opportunity to highlight medical issues that are pertinent to

Black men. Health information was provided, and screenings of blood pressure, glucose and prostate-specific antigens (PSA) were conducted.

Gamma Lambda Chapter Senior Brothers’ Luncheon (Monthly)

Gamma Lambda Chapter values the contributions of their senior brothers and because of this we celebrate them monthly prior to chapter meeting.

There are typically 20-30 senior brothers who participate, with an additional 15-20 brothers who come to support the event. The discussions typically revolved around national and chapter history, reclamation and thoughts of college days.

Alpha Esquires

Alpha Esquires is a group of metro Detroit high school students. The program is wide-ranging and designed to prepare young men for college and the world beyond. Activities for the Alpha Esquires include college prep, financial literacy, and etiquette workshops. In addition to its induction ceremonies and officer installations, a scholarship banquet is held. Alpha

Esquires work along side sponsoring brothers who show them how to handle business matters and social issues. Topics covered thus far include presentation skills and dressing for success. In addition, the young men have participated in our Meals on Wheels program, March for Babies community service initiative, and Project Alpha workshops.

The ranks of the Alpha Esquires have now swollen to over 51 young men and continue to blossom. Seven of the new Esquires are the sons or relatives of Alphas. Four of the Neophytes have joined our ranks as

Mentors.

Gamma Lambda Education Foundation

The Gamma Lambda Education Foundation is a non-profit organization formed in 1980 for the purpose of raising funds for and awarding scholarships to metropolitan Detroit area African-American males graduating from public high schools. Since its inception, the Education

Foundation has awarded over $250,000 in scholarships. In 2010 alone, the

Foundation was able to award $7,000 in scholarships to deserving young men at the Annual Scholarship Gala. Perhaps the greatest testament to the work of the Education Foundation is the fact that so many of our past scholarship recipients have in turn supported other African-American young men that follow as scholarship candidates. Several of our past recipients are now members of the fraternity, and two of our current members of Gamma Lambda and the Education Foundation were former scholarship recipients.

America n boys disproportionately represent children waiting for “Bigs.”

In response to this alarming trend BBBS has called on three African-

American fraternities to address this issue. African-American fraternities have always taken the lead in community service and been the catalyst for change within the community. Gamma Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi

Alpha Fraternity, Inc. have already begun to make an impact.

Members of this fraternity are enriching the social and educational skills of young African-American men in the city of Detroit, as well as helping to enhance self-esteem, promote responsible attitudes and corresponding behaviors. BBBSMD is joining with Gamma Lambda

Chapter to continue to lead the way in the Cody-Rouge Village project.

The fraternity has committed to mentoring 10 boys in the Cody-Rouge area (48228) ages 12-14 yrs. The ten young men, who are 9th graders, will in turn mentor 7th graders.
