Preparation
Housing:
When deciding where to live you need to do your research in advance and then take tours
to make sure your dorm is the right fit.
1- Research each dorm on campus and make a list of all the pros and cons. Each dorm
will have different amenities so you need to decide which of these is most important
to you.
a- Location, proximity to a cafeteria, and room set up are all factors that you
want to look at when deciding.
b- A lot of dorms also have wings or floors of the dorm that are just for certain
majors, this is a great way to meet people that will be in your classes and
have someone to study with nearby.
2- After doing prior research take a trip to the university and tour your top four
choices to see if this sways your decision.
You might think you want a roommate and decide it is too small or not like the
cafeteria at another.
o It is important to get a total picture of where you will be living for a year.
Books:
After registering for classes you will be able to know which books you need to purchase for
each class.
1- Decide between renting and buying your books.
a- When renting it is cheaper up front than buying but you will not get the
option of selling back your book and receiving some money for it.
o If renting is what you need then you will want to price the on campus
bookstore, off campus, and online websites like chegg.com and
campusbookrentals.com.
o If buying your textbooks you will price the off campus, on campus
bookstores, and websites like amazon.com and textbooks.com.
o Whichever way is more convenient for your needs you will have online
and in store ways of getting your books.
b- Doing research is the key to getting the most for your money.
2- You can buy your books before classes start to make sure you’re prepared but you
run the risk of getting to class and your professor letting you know the textbook is
not necessary for class.
