Section 2: Assessment overview and sample student
profile Years 11–12
The study area core underpins the study area specification and is essential in realising the aims
of the course. It consists of the core principles that encompass a problem-solving approach to
task or project development. The study area core is delivered through specific unit choices.

 Schools must select a minimum of four to a maximum of eight electives (SAS Section 3.2).
 If a school-based elective is included, the topic must be shown on the study plan. The unit
should reflect the intent of the Information and Communication Technology study area
specification and be distinct from other electives selected (SAS Section 4.14).
 A maximum of 25% of the course may be a school-developed elective or electives
(SAS Section 3.2.3).
Guide to completing Section 2
Use this information as a guide to completing the columns in the ‘Assessment overview and
sample student profile Years 11–12’.
Approximate time — indicate the time allocated to each unit.
Course of study — outline the sequence of the course by detailing the elective selected. Provide
a description of the assessment, including technique.
Conditions under which assessment is completed — describe the conditions of assessment, e.g.
supervised/unsupervised, individual/group. Include an indication of length for written assessment
and time for spoken assessment.
Formative or summative — indicate if the assessment is formative or summative. In a
four-semester course, Year 11 assessment is (in most cases) considered formative, while the
fullest and latest information is most likely to come from Year 12 assessment.
Results — complete the profile as it would appear for a student who has completed all four
semesters of the course by allocating:
 standards for each assessment task
 overall exit standards for each criterion
 an exit level of achievement.
