The hemispheres of the Earth Types of Regions Regions • Based on: – Characteristics of a place: • • • • Cultural Political Economic Social, etc… • Region- area that has common characteristics different from neighboring areas. Cultural Region • Cultural Region: common characteristic of people living there. – Pick 1 example and write it down – Ex.: Texas- shares history, united by government, educational system and similar ways of life. – Ex.: Middle East- large deserts w/mountains, river valleys (Nile, Tigris, Euphrates), crossroads of Africa, Asia, & Europe- where civilization 1st developed. Create a chart like this one in your notes. Leave room for a definition and example for each type of region. Region Formal Functional Perceptual Formal • Region with clear boundaries – One common human or physical characteristic • • • • Pick 1 example and write it down Ex.: counties, states, & countries Ex.: Corn Belt- states that grow large amounts of corn ex.: Little Havana- in Miami where large #’s of Cubans live. But you must still turn it in today.
