Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Balmer was to receive a $797,000 NLTBE roster bonus in
2010.
Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Seattle is now responsible for nearly $800,000 in
guaranteed base salaries in Balmer's contract, including his $583,000 2010 base salary and
$214,000 of Balmer's $622,000 base salary in 2011. According to a league source, in addition to
the base salary guarantees, Balmer has a maximum of $350,000 in roster bonuses due in 201112, and can earn up to $250,000 in workout bonuses in the final two seasons of his contract.
Through playing time and performance incentives, Balmer can increase his $700,000 base salary
in 2012 by a maximum of $500,000.
Mike Florio, PFT: Balmer paid $80,000 back to the Niners in order to facilitate the trade. That
number represents 25 percent of the 2010 portion of his $1.6 million signing bonus.
Brian McIntyre, Tacoma News-Tribune: Balmer is entering the fourth year of his five-year rookie

for now. It becomes fully guaranteed at the start of the 2014 league year. He also can earn pergame active roster bonuses that total, if all earned, $750,000. In 2015, Bowman’s base salary is
$4.7 million. Again, it’s guaranteed for now for injury only. It becomes fully guaranteed at the
start of the 2015 league year. Bowman also has the per-game roster bonuses that total
$750,000. In 2016, the base salary is $5.85 million. $4.17 million of it is guaranteed for injury
only for now; it becomes fully guaranteed at the start of the 2016 league year. Bowman once
again has the per-game roster bonuses that total $750,000. In 2017, Bowman’s base salary is
$6.75 million, non-guaranteed, with the per-game roster bonuses that total $750,000. In 2018,
the salary pushes to $8.7 million, with the per-game roster bonuses that total $750,000.
Matt Maiocco, CSN Bay Area: Because of his signing bonus, Bowman's 2012 cap figure
immediately rose from $717,887 to $2.217 million, the source said.
Matt Maiocco, CSN Bay Area: The 49ers converted $3.27 million of Bowman’s scheduled base
salary for 2014 into an up-front signing bonus that can be spread over the course of his contract.
Bowman is signed through 2018. As a result, Bowman’s salary cap figure for 2014 drops from
$7.05 million to $4.434 million.

Matt Maiocco, CSN Bay Area: the two year deal reached between Ahmad Brooks and the 49ers
was worth a total of $4.225 million dollars. It includes a signing bonus of $1.85 million, and a
2011 roster bonus of $175,000.
Mike Sando, ESPN: Brooks signed a two-year deal featuring a $1.85 million signing bonus with
base salaries of $900,000 and $1.2 million, with another $275,000 in bonuses available in 2011.
Matt Maiocco, CSN Bay Area: Brooks will count $2.85 million against the 49ers' salary cap this
year after signing a six-year, $37 million contract extension this week, a league source told
CSNBayArea.com. Brooks' deal, which 49ers chief negotiator Paraag Marathe worked out with
agent Greg Williams, includes $17.5 million in guarantees, including a $7.5 million signing bonus.
Williams told the San Jose Mercury News this week that the contract is worth $44.5 million. That
figure is believed to be the maximum if Brooks attains every escalator and incentive.
Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Mac's Football Blog has obtained the details of Brooks'
contract which, at the time of signing, includes $8.25 million in fully guaranteed money and
$9.25 million that is guaranteed for injury only.
As Maiocco initially reported, Brooks received a $7.5 million signing bonus. The other portion of
the deal that is fully guaranteed is a $750,000 base salary for the 2012 season. Along with
$500,000 in per game roster bonuses ($31,250) and a $100,000 workout bonus…
In 2013, Brooks is due a $4.3 million base salary that is currently guaranteed for injury only and
will become guaranteed for skill and cap if Brooks is on the roster on April 1, 2013. Brooks' base
salary and the base salary guarantee could be reduced by $2.5 million, with the de-escalation
tied to his 2012 sacks. Brooks could also increase his base salary by $500,000, as is the case in
each year of his contract. Brooks has $750,000 in per game roster bonuses ($46,875 per) and a
$100,000 workout bonus for a 2013 cap number of $4.3 million. Brooks is scheduled to receive
a $5.15 million base salary in 2014, of which $4.95 million is guaranteed for injury only at the
time of signing. If Brooks' 2013 salary is decreased, the full amount of the 2014 salary ($5.15
million) will be guaranteed for injury only. If Brooks is on the roster on April 1, 2014, his base
salary will become guaranteed for skill and cap. Like the season before, Brooks' 2014 base salary
and base salary guarantee could decrease by $2.5 million, which is tied to the previous season's
sack totals, or increase by $500,000
In each year of the contract, Brooks can void all de-escalators if the 49ers win 12 games, plays in
the NFC Championship Game and Brooks has a playing-time percentage of over 93 percent.
Beginning in 2014, Brooks can void the de-escalators in his contract by having two prior seasons
with 12 sacks. The rest of Brooks' contract contains base salaries of $6 million (2015), $6.5
million (2016) and $6.95 million (2017). Portions of Brooks' 2015 base salary could become
guaranteed if there are reductions to his 2013 or 2014 salary guaranteed. Brooks has $750,000
in per game roster bonuses and $100,000 workout bonuses in each of those seasons, as well.

Hank Gola, NY Daily News: The 49ers can't have that much cap room, however, after signing
Redskins guard Ray Brown to a five-year, $10 million deal that includes a $2.75 million bonus
and $450,000 in first-year salary.
Dave Sell, Washington Post: His deal with San Francisco pays a $2.75 million signing bonus and
salaries of $450,000 (1996), $1,275,000 (1997), $1,025,000 (1998), $1,250,000 (1999) and
$1,750,000 (2000). It's less likely he'll see the last two seasons of the deal. But there are
$500,000 reporting bonuses due on March 15 of 1998, 1999 and 2000.
Gary Swan, SF Chronicle: The 49ers freed up some room under the salary cap yesterday by
restructuring the contract of guard Ray Brown, saving the team $1.2 million, according to his
agent Steve Baker. Brown will earn $2 million next season, and the team still looks at him as its
starting starting left guard, Baker said. He receives a $1.5 million signing bonus as part of a fiveyear deal but the overall package reduces his salary-cap liability from $2.9 million to $1.7 million
against the 49ers' [1999] cap.
Clark Judge, San Jose Mercury News: Brown, 37, agreed to a contract that will reduce his cap
figure by $1.5 million, agent Steve Baker said. In exchange for dropping his salary this season
from $1.75 million to $440,000, Brown gained a $1.81 million signing bonus and two more years
on the deal. He is signed through 2005.

Brian McIntyre, Yahoo Sports: Cornerback Tarell Brown had triggered a $2 million escalator to
his 2013 base salary and was scheduled to earn $2.925 million in the final year of his contract.
However, since Brown opted to do his offseason training at his home in Texas, instead of
participating in the 49ers' workout program in Santa Clara, Calif., that escalator has voided and
his base salary has returned to his original $925,000, a source with knowledge of Brown's
contract details confirmed to "Shutdown Corner". Brown was also scheduled to receive a
$75,000 workout bonus, but that has vanished, as well.
Jason La Canfora, CBS Sports: Cornerback Tarell Brown has received a $300,000 bonus from the
49ers. Brown missed out on a $2 million workout bonus last offseason, but was recently
compensated by the team to help make up for his mistake.

Howard Balzer, Sports Xchange: the reality is, it's not an $80 million deal. Breaking down the
deal by year, Clements did not receive a signing bonus, but there is a $10 million roster bonus
this year, which counts immediately against the salary cap. He will also receive a guaranteed $10
million option bonus in 2008, which for cap purposes will prorate against the cap from 2008
through 2013 at $1.67 million a year. Once the option is exercised, the final year of the contract
(2014) is voided, wiping out close to $16 million in compensation. Thus, for practical purposes, it
is a 7-year, $64.02 million contract, not an 8-year, $80 million deal. In addition, the final two
years of the deal carry a combined $19.87 million in salary and workout bonuses. His base
salaries total $7.5 million for the first three years, before his salary jumps to $6 million in 2010.
Clements will also receive a $500,000 off-season workout bonus in each year of the contract.
Matt Maiocco, CSN Bay Area: Clements, 31, a 10-year veteran, is scheduled to earn a nonguaranteed salary of $7.25 million in 2011 with another $7.95 million available in "likely-to-beearned" incentives.

Tania Ganguli, Florida Times-Union: Davis signed for $15.94 million in guaranteed money, a 12.7
percent increase over last year, and $19.25 million in base package for a 9.4 percent increase.
Mike Florio, PFT: Davis, for instance, will earn $26.5 million over five years, with $15.954 million
guaranteed, according to a league source.
Details of rookie deal courtesy of Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballblog.com
Albert Breer, NFL.com: Davis' five-year extension is worth $37,295,600 in new money, with
$17M in total guarantees.
Matt Maiocco, CSN Bay Area: Davis and the 49ers agreed last week on a seven-year deal worth
$37.295 million that includes five new years added to his original contract. He received a $7.5
million signing bonus. His first-year base salary of $880,000 is fully guaranteed, and his entire
base salaries of $1.845 million and $2.35 million are guaranteed in 2014 and 2015, respectively,
if he remains on the 49ers roster on April 1 in each of those seasons. In 2016, $2.1 million of his
$2.65 million salary is guaranteed if he is on the team on April 1 of that year. The 49ers and
Davis agreed to "de-escalators" in each of the seven seasons. His base pay would decrease
significantly if he fails to fulfill workout and weight requirements. In the final five years of Davis'
contract, $1.25 million annually is tied to attendance at offseason workouts and his weight… The
49ers are approximately $1 million under the salary cap after Davis' contract extension, which
raises his 2013 cap figure from $3.56 million to $4.25 million. Davis has reasonable cap figures
for the duration of his deal: $7.53 million in 2014; $6.72 million in 2015; $5.15 million in 2016;
$6.5 million in 2017; and $6.375 million in both 2018 and 2019.
Joel Corry, NFP: Davis was scheduled to make $1.7 million and $2,995,600 in 2013 and 2014
prior to signing his new deal. The $32,599,400 extension contains $16.999 million in guarantees.
Only $8.38 million is fully guaranteed upon execution of the contract. $7.5 million of Davis’ fully
guaranteed money is a signing bonus and $880,000 is his 2013 base salary. Davis’ $1.845 million
2014 base salary, $2.35 million 2015 base salary and $2.104 million of his $2.605 million 2016
base salary are guaranteed for injury only. His 2014 through 2016 base salaries become fully
guaranteed if he’s on San Francisco’s roster on April 1st in each specific contract year (i.e.; 2014
salary becomes guaranteed on April 1, 2014). There are two roster bonuses in 2014 totaling
$2.32 million that are also guaranteed for injury only. $820,000 is on the fifth day of the league
year and $1.5 million is on September 1. The 2010 first round pick has unguaranteed $4 million,
$5.35 million and $5.35 million base salaries in 2017, 2018 and 2019. There are also per game
active roster bonuses totaling $1 million ($62,500 per game) in each of the extension years
(2015-2019).
Davis’ deal contains base salary de-escalators worth up to a maximum of $1.25 million in a
majority of the contract years. There’s a $250,000 de-escalator for each year that he doesn’t
participate in 90% of the scheduled workouts in the 49ers’ offseason conditioning program.
Davis’ base salary will de-escalate by $500,000 in each of the 2014 through 2019 years that he
doesn’t meet certain weight requirements. The remaining $500,000 of the de-escalator pertains
to the final five years of the contract and is triggered if Davis doesn’t have at least 50% playtime
in the previous season.

Mike Florio, PFT: We're told that the $23 million is guaranteed for injury, and that $14.5 million
is guaranteed for injury and skill. The six-year value of the deal exceeds $42 million.
Matt Maiocco, CSN Bay Area: The contract includes $23 million in guaranteed money with $10
million of it coming in the form of a signing bonus. Here are the contract details, according to an
NFL source: 2010: $3.874 million base salary (all guaranteed); $100,000 workout bonus. 2011:
$4.708 million base salary (all guaranteed); $200,000 workout bonus; $400,000 roster bonus
($25,000 for every game active). 2012: $5.751 million base salary ($4.418 million guaranteed);
$200,000 workout bonus; $400,000 roster bonus ($25,000 for every game active). 2013: $6.072

(not guaranteed); $200,000 workout bonus; $400,000 roster bonus ($25,000 for every game
active).
Andrew Brandt, NFP: The 49ers added five years past 2010 giving Davis total value of $42.455
million. Thus, the “new money” of the contract – minus the pre-existing amount for 2010 -- is
$36.75 million, an impressive $7.35 million Average Per Year (APY)... The contract contains an
impressive $23 million guaranteed in the following form: 2010 “functional guarantee” of
$13.874 million; 2011 salary guarantee of $4.708 million for injury; 2012 salary guarantee of
$4.418 million ($3.306 for injury and $1.112 full guarantee at signing)
The “functional guarantee” suggests that the 49ers are obviously not cutting Davis now and if he
suffers an injury, that money is due (same principle with Jets’ recent deals, including Darrelle
Revis). Due to the rules of this uncapped 2010, the $1.112 million guaranteed at the time of
signing reallocates into the 49ers’ 2009 Cap (the last capped year), using every penny of Cap
room they had left.
Matt Maiocco, CSN Bay Area: Davis provided the biggest cap relief for the 49ers of
approximately $1.2 million. Davis' 2012 cap figure went from a little over $8 million to $6.8
million. The 49ers awarded Davis a $1.48 million signing bonus and had his remaining $25,000
per game active roster bonuses for the final five regular season games designated as an OATSB
item (other amount treated as signing bonus)… Davis' contract still averages $7.35 million
through 2015…

Kevin Lynch, SF Chronicle: The Garcia story took a lucrative turn yesterday with the signing of
the 49ers' quarterback to a $36 million, six-year deal -- $8.1 million of which in guaranteed in
the first two years. And if Garcia attains easy-to-reach incentives, the contract will shorten to
four years… His cap figure for 2001 is only $600,000. However, bonuses, incentives and
escalators in the deal can pump up the value of the contract significantly.
Kevin Lynch, SF Chronicle: The team realized about $3 million in additional savings when Garcia
signed a restructured deal yesterday converting $4.05 million of salary to a signing bonus. Garcia
suddenly has become one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in football considering this season's
$7.1 million in bonuses, more than $1 million in incentives and his salary.

Joel Corry, CBS Sports: He signed a four-year, $27.577 million contract extension in 2007 after
rushing for an NFC leading 1,695 yards during the 2006 season as a second-year player.
Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: Gore's full base salary of $2.5 million in 2009 is guaranteed.
Mike Florio, PFT: the new money is actually $18.9 million, with the remaining $2.1 million tied to
incentives that hinge upon Gore gained more than 1,600 yards rushing and receiving in 2012,
2013, and 2014. Also, the deal gives Gore no new money this year. Instead, $1 million in pergame roster bonuses has been shifted to Gore’s base salary. Of the new money, $8.1 million is
tied to Gore being on the active game-day roster, in 64-game increments. If he’s on injured
reserve or otherwise deactivated, he won’t earn the corresponding bonus. Also, the guaranteed
money is $12.5 million, but the guarantee is for injury only.
Samuel Lam, SF Examiner: Here's the breakdown of the $13.5 million "guaranteed": 2011: $4.9
million (which was already part of his original contract) 2012: $2 million base salary 2013: $3.3
million base salary 2014: $3.3 million base salary Each amount is only guaranteed on a year-toyear basis and that is if Gore makes the roster.
Jason La Canfora, NFL.com: Gore’s deal includes injury guarantees but not skill guarantees,
giving the 49ers great flexibility from year to year. And he didn’t receive any new upfront money
in 2011, according to sources… Gore has base salaries of $2 million in 2012 and $3.3 million in
2013 and again in 2014. The 2012 and 2013 salaries are guaranteed for injury but not skill. Gore
could receive a maximum of $6 million in 2012 if he achieves various roster bonuses (including
$1 million at the start of the new league year and workout bonuses but, again, if he is released
prior to those points for skill, none of that is guaranteed). Gore also has roster bonuses in 2013
and 2014 and workout and performance bonuses (based on achieving the lofty figure of 1,625
combined rushing and receiving yards)… Gore could receive $6 million in 2012, at age 30,
including bonuses, which actually would be more take-home money then he accrues in 2011.
And if he stays productive and hits incentives, he could increase those figures in the final two
years of the deal.
Joel Corry, NFP: Gore’s three-year contract extension signed in 2011 contains $2 million in per
game active roster bonuses ($125,000 per game) in each year. Gore’s injury guarantees don’t
contain a mechanism where they become fully guaranteed.

Len Pasquarelli, AJC: The three-year contract, which will pay Hall base salaries of $800,000,
$900,000 and $1 million, includes no signing bonus, but does guarantee the first two years.
Clark Judge, San Jose Mercury News: "We've known about this for some time," said Steiner.
"There was an adjustment made in his contract -- it was adjusted downward (Hall received
$750,000 instead of $1 million) and it was extended (Hall signed a two-year deal that expires
after the 1995 season) -- so for doing that there was a give and take." In removing Hall from the

Gary Swan, San Francisco Chronicle: It is a six-year extension on the last year of Hanks' current
contract, which was worth about $670,000… Hanks yesterday earned $4.75 million by putting
his signature on a contract through the year 2002. Hanks became the highest-paid safety in the
NFL by agreeing to a new 7-year, $22.4 million contract averaging $3.4 million a year. It is a sixyear extension on the last year of Hanks' current contract, which was worth about $670,000.
Considering the 28-year-old Hanks' status as a two-time Pro Bowl player and the consensus best
young safety in the game, he was probably one of the most underpaid players in the league.
The new deal brings Hanks up to $1.1 million this season. Then he is due to earn $1.425 million
in 1997, $1.75 million in 1998, $2.35 million in 1999, $3.05 million in 2000, $3.75 million in 2001
and $4.45 million in 2002.
Jeff Chadiha, SF Examiner: Hanks was scheduled to earn $2.35 million in base pay this season…
The restructured deal will provide Hanks with a $500,000 base salary, $1 million signing bonus
and a Pro Bowl incentive that could make the total package worth more than $2.35 million if
Hanks, who has played in four Pro Bowls, returns to that game.

AP: The San Francisco 49ers signed unrestricted free-agent running back Garrison Hearst to a
two-year contract Friday worth at least $2.8 million… He received a $600,000 signing bonus and
will make $200,000 in base salary, followed by a roster bonus of $1 million and base salary of $1
million in 1998.
Clark Judge, San Jose Mercury News: Hearst's five-year, $15.1 million contract that includes a
$3.25 million signing bonus… Hearst will be paid $250,000 this season, $2 million in 1999, $2.6
million in 2000, $3.2 million in 2001 and $3.8 million in 2002. The fifth year is voided, however, if
Hearst rushes for 1,100 yards in two of the first four seasons.
Kevin Lynch, SF Chronicle: Hearst cut back his $1.7 million salary [in 2001] to barely under
$500,000 by converting $1.2 million to easy-to-reach incentives. Since Hearst hasn't played in
two seasons because of injury, most of the incentives were based on playing time.

Johnson could earn as much as $1.5 million more in incentives. To reach that number, however,

second year of the contract includes a per-game roster bonus that would pay Johnson $135,000

Mike Klis, Denver Post: The No. 36 pick, San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick, received a
four-year, $5.22 million deal with $3.8 million guaranteed.
Mike Florio, PFT: only $13.073 million is guaranteed at signing. It comes in the form of a
$12.328 million signing bonus, a base salary of $645,000, and a workout bonus of $100,000. For
2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and part of 2018, the base salaries are guaranteed only for injury. On
April 1 of each year, the guarantees convert from injury only to fully guaranteed… The base
salary for 2015 is $12.4 million, guaranteed for injury only until April 1, 2015. For 2016, the base
salary is $13.9 million, guaranteed for injury only until April 1, 2016. For 2017, the base salary is
$16.5 million, guaranteed for injury only until April 1, 2017. For 2018, the base salary is $17
million, $5.2 million of which is guaranteed for injury only until April 1, 2018… The contract also
includes, starting in 2015, a whopping $2 million per year in per-game roster bonuses, an
amount that one source characterized as “massive” in comparison to similar deals. It means
that, for every game Kaepernick misses due to injury after the 2014 season, he loses $125,000.
Starting in 2015, $400,000 per year is tied to workout bonuses, which adds up to $2.4 million of
the base value.
Mike Florio, PFT: The initial, embellished report of Colin Kaepernick’s new contract indicated
that the deal was worth “up to” $126 million. As we now know, $12 million of the money to be
earned by Kaepernick comes from so-called de-escalators… here’s precisely what he must do to
get the full $12 million, at $2 million per year. In 2014, he must be named an Associated Press
first-team or second-team All-Pro, or he must: (1) win the NFC title game, (2) have 80-percent
playing time in the regular season, and (3) have cumulative 80-percent playing time in all
postseason games, not including the Super Bowl… The process continues, with $2 million per
year going away until Kaepernick becomes a first-team or second-team AP All-Pro, or if he wins
the NFC title game, takes 80 percent of the snaps in the regular-season, and takes 80-percent of
the snaps in each playoff game other than the Super Bowl.

Pittsburgh Tribune Review: The offer the Steelers tendered to restricted free agent Andy Lee is
for $7.1 million over six years and includes a $1.69 million signing bonus, said Eddie Edwards,
Lee's agent. The San Francisco 49ers have until Tuesday to match the Steelers' offer for Lee or
take the Steelers' sixth-round pick in April's draft as compensation for the former Pitt player.
Brian McIntyre, NFL.com: the "new money" in Lee's deal has a base value of $20.4 million, a $3.4
million per year average that ranks third among NFL punters… Lee received a $2.5-million
signing bonus and the $1.1 million base salary from his previous contract remains in place and
has been fully guaranteed. In 2013, Lee has a $1.8 million base salary and $1.75 million roster
bonus that are currently guaranteed for injury only. If Lee is on the 49ers' roster on the fifth day
of the 2013 league year, his base salary and roster bonus ($3.55 million in total compensation)
will become fully guaranteed. Lee is due base salaries of $1.9 million (2014), $2.05 million
(2015), $2.833 million (2016), $3.433 million (2017) and $4.134 million (2018). Lee's salary cap
numbers going forward are $1.906 million (2012), $4.05 million (2013), $2.4 million (2014),
$2.55 million (2015), $3.333 million (2016), $3.433 million (2017) and $4.134 million (2018).
$25,000 incentives tied to Lee being named to the All-NFL team are available in each year of the
contract. Since Lee earned that honor in 2011, the $25,000 incentive for 2012 is considered a
"Likely To Be Earned" and currently counts against this year's salary cap.

cap… Manningham agreed to a two-year, $7.375 million contract that includes a $2 million
signing bonus and another $2.45 million in salary guarantees, the source said. Manningham's
base salaries are $1.2 million in 2012 and $3.6 million in 2013. He is scheduled to count $4.887
on the 49ers' 2013 salary cap.
Mike Florio, PFT: $2 million signing bonus… $1.2 million base salary for 2012, fully guaranteed…
$250,000 in total per-game roster bonuses for 2012… $100,000 workout bonus for 2012… $3.6

$50,000 for nine touchdowns or $100,000 for 11 touchdowns or $250,000 for 13 touchdowns;
and $250,000 for making it to the Pro Bowl. So it’s a two-year deal with a base value of $7.5
million, a maximum value of $10 million, and $4.45 million guaranteed ($3.2 million fully
guaranteed).
Matt Maiocco, CSN Bay Area: Manningham agreed to a $1.8 million pay cut in his base salary for
the 2013 season, an NFL source confirmed Thursday. The new contract, first noticed by Jason
Hurley of NinersNation.com, reduces Manningham's base pay from $3.6 million to $1.8 million.
Of his salary, $1.25 million is guaranteed for injury only. The new contract eliminates a possible
$250,000 roster bonus, as well as a $100,000 workout bonus and incentives, the source said.

John Crumpacker, SF Examiner: The strong safety with the whopping $2.95 million salary

Ira Miller, SF Chronicle: McDonald's age (30) and contract ($2.335 million base salary this year,
$2.4 million the next three) make it difficult to trade him.
Ira Miller, SF Chronicle: McDonald, originally scheduled to earn $2.335 million, signed a new
contract for $1.25 million, a drop of $1.085 million. He will earn another $710,000 if the 49ers
win at least 11 games. He will get $150,000 if the 49ers rank fifth or better in the league in
regular-season record. Those are among 22 incentives in the new contract.

Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: Here is the breakdown on San Francisco center Jeremy Newberry's new
six-year, $20.025 million contract. The deal, reported by ESPN.com in the wee hours Saturday
morning, includes a signing bonus of $5 million. The base salaries are $525,000 (2002), $2
million (2003), $2.5 million (2004), $3 million (2005), $3.5 million (2006) and $3 million (2007).
There is a roster bonus of $500,000 in 2006.
Dennis Georgatos, San Jose Mercury News: Newberry reworked his contract before last season.
Newberry accepted a pay cut of roughly 50 percent to $1.5 million. When his comeback faltered
in training camp because of similar problems in his left knee, the 49ers placed Newberry on

Terrell Owens, Catch This: The deal included a $270,000 signing bonus and overall it was a threeyear deal worth $840,000, including the bonus. My salary was $152,000 for the first year,
$190,000 for the second, and $228,000 for the third. Only the signing bonus was guaranteed.
Jim Thomas, St. Louis Post-Dispatch: the franchise tag designation means the 49ers had to offer
Owens the average of the five highest-paid wide receivers in '98 - a whopping $3.531 million.
Sportsline: Owens officially signed the contract agreement first reported by SportsLine last
week. Owens received a signing bonus of $7.5 million. His base salaries for the seven-year deal
are: $400,000 (1999), $2.8 million (2000), $3.5 million (2001), $4.1 million (2002), $4.7 million
(2003), $5.3 million (2004) and $5.9 million (2005). That brings the contract value to $34.2
million. But because the final two seasons are "voidable," it will most likely turn out to be a fiveyear contract worth $23 million.
AP: The Eagles sent a fifth-round draft pick to Baltimore and defensive end Brandon Whiting to
San Francisco. The Ravens got back the second-round pick they sent to the 49ers for Owens.

Barry Svrluga, Washington Post: he left, though not for the kind of deal he once envisioned – a
one-year contract worth $2.125 million, with a $2.125 million signing bonus.
Mike Florio, PFT: Rogers has agreed to terms on a four-year deal with a base value of $29.3
million. The contract can be worth as much as $31.3 million.
Matt Maiocco, CSN Bay Area: Rogers counts $5.5 million against the 49ers' 2012 cap after
signing a four-year, $29.3 million contract that includes a $5 million signing bonus… Rogers' deal
includes a 2012 base salary of $3.9 million, along with annual $100,000 workout bonuses and up
to $250,000 yearly in roster bonuses. Rogers' base salaries increase to $5.5 million in 2013,
$6.25 million in 2014, and $7.25 million in 2015. The deal contains another $2 million total in
possible incentives. Rogers' base salary this year is fully guaranteed, and $1.75 million of his
2013 salary is guaranteed. His entire $5.5 million salary for 2013 is guaranteed if Rogers remains
on the roster on April 1, 2013.
Matt Maiocco, CSN Bay Area: Rogers' salary figure went from $5.5 million to $4.7 million, as he
also had his per-game roster bonuses for the final five games converted to OATSB… Rogers'
average salary is $7.325 million through 2015…
Matt Maiocco, CSN Bay Area: Because Rogers was on the team's roster on April 1, $1.25 million

Jim Armstrong, Denver Post: According to the CBA, salaries can't be increased more than 30
percent from 1998, the final year of the NFL's salary cap, to 1999. Scrafford's original contract
called for salaries of $1.1 million in 1998 and $1.75 million in 1999. What to do? The final year
of the deal was wiped away, leaving Scrafford with a four-year deal and salaries of $400,000,
$700,000, $900,000 and $1.1 million. He also got a $1-million signing bonus, a $250,000 hit on
the original $1.25-million bonus.
Ira Miller, SF Chornicle: the 49ers added a year to his contract and converted $474,500 from
salary to signing bonus, magically saving themselves more than $350,000 in cap room without
spending a penny or shorting Scrafford.
John Crumpacker, SF Examiner: Scrafford signed a farcical six-year contract worth $13.5 million.
Including a $510,000 signing bonus, Scrafford will make $750,000 this season. A $4 million roster
bonus taking effect in March of 1999 indicates the 49ers do not expect Scrafford to play beyond
this season… If Scrafford is on the field for 35 percent of the offensive plays and the 49ers win
the Super Bowl, he will receive $400,000 in bonus money… His six-year, $13.5 million contract
breaks down thusly: 1998 - $240,000 base salary; $510,000 signing bonus. 1999 - $4 million
roster bonus effective in March; $1.25 million base salary. 2000 - $1.5 million base salary. 2001 $1.75 million base salary. 2002 - $2 million base salary. 2003 - $2.25 million base salary.

Mike Florio, PFT: For Smith, the first overall pick, the bonus money is $13.3 million ($1 million to
sign, option bonus of $8.3 million, and "log" bonus of $4 million), the guaranteed money is $24
million, and the total package is $56 million over six years.
Matt Maiocco, Santa Rosa Press Democrat: I do not have the details on Alex Smith's new
contract, but a league source told me he is pretty certain it averages around $3 million a year
over the two years. … Smith's [restructured] deal contains incentives that could reach a little
more than $2 million per season, the source said. Those incentives are not known, but they are
believed to be more difficult to reach than Hill's incentives. In addition to his adjusted contract,
Smith will receive payments of $4 million the next two seasons. This money is a carryover from
his previous contract as part of a deferred guarantee bonus. This is not new money, and it has
already counted against the salary cap.
Matt Maiocco, Santa Rosa Press Democrat: Smith’s new deal saves the 49ers about $6 million on
the salary cap, according to a league source. The deal is believed to be worth approximately
$6.5 million over two seasons. Smith can make around $2 million annually in incentives, too.
Andrew Brandt, NFP: last March, Smith, who had made over $26M from the 49ers in four
seasons, agreed to reduce his remaining compensation down to $6.5M total for this season and
next, with incentives for another $2M per season.
Michael David Smith, PFT: Smith and the 49ers have agreed to terms on a one-year deal.
According to multiple reports, Smith will make about $5 million this season.
Matt Maiocco, CSN Bay Area: Smith's contract counts $9.25 million against the 49ers' 2012
salary cap… Smith signed a three-year, $24 million contract with $9 million in guaranteed
money, as reported on Wednesday. The deal can average as much as $11 million annually if
Smith maxes out his incentives and escalator. On the surface, the contract looks as if it contains
$16.5 million in guaranteed money. But Smith's second-year base salary of $7.5 million is fully
guaranteed only if Smith remains on the 49ers' roster on April 1, 2013.
Smith received no signing bonus, but his $5 million base salary and $3 million roster bonus for
2012 are guaranteed. Also, $1 million of his second-year salary is fully guaranteed. In figuring
Smith's cap figure, likely-to-be-earned incentives of $1.25 million count each of the three
seasons because Smith would have reached those incentives with his performance from last
season. Smith's projected cap figures for the three years of his contract are $9.25 million in
2012, $9.75 million in 2013, and $8.75 million in 2014.
Mike Florio, PFT: $1 million non-guaranteed roster bonus in 2013.
AP: The 49ers will receive the Chiefs' second-round pick, 34th overall, in this year's draft and a
conditional pick in next year's draft…

Kevin Lynch, SF Chronicle: With linebacker Derek Smith recently agreeing to a five-year, $10.75

Matt Maiocco, CSN Bay Area: Under the terms of the deal he signed with the 49ers in 2008,
Smith averaged $7.5 million per season… Smith's scheduled $8 million salary for 2013 was
converted to a $6.56 million signing bonus, a $940,000 base salary with a $500,000 workout
bonus and a $100,000 roster bonus. Under the new deal, he is scheduled to earn $8.1 million
this season. The conversion of salary to signing bonus moved Smith's cap figure from $8 million
to $3.726 million, the source said. He is scheduled to earn $4.55 million in 2014 with a $3.15
million salary and a $1.4 million roster bonus. In 2015, he is scheduled to receive $2.65 million in
base salary with a $1.4 million roster bonus.
Joel Corry, NFP: Smith signed a two-year, $9.1 million contract extension… Smith has per game
active roster bonuses totaling $1.6 million ($100,000 per game) in 2014 and 2015. $1.4 million
of the roster bonuses count against the cap right now because Smith missed two games last
year.

Details of 2009 deal courtesy of Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com
Scout.com: Over the life of the contract, Staley's base salaries for each year are as follows: 2007:
$285,000; 2008: $1,000,000; 2009: $1,200,000; 2010: $1,400,000; 2011: $650,000. Staley's deal
is laden with other roster and option bonuses and other bonuses that are tied to playing time
and his participation in organized team activities. In each year of the contract, Staley will receive
a $100,000 bonus if he reaches the Pro Bowl. Staley's deal includes almost $5.6 million in
guaranteed money. The total package, if he were to reach all incentives and bonuses, has a
maximum value of $10.7 million. According to another league source, the value of Staley's deal
is an 8.5 percent increase over the contract signed by the No. 28 overall selection in the 2006
draft, tight end Marcedes Lewis of Jacksonville.
Joel Corry, CBS Sports: Their 2007 first-round pick, Staley, signed a six-year, $40.2 million
contract extension (with an additional $3 million in Pro Bowl base salary escalators) in 2009
before the third year of his five-year rookie contract.
Matt Maiocco, Santa Rosa Press Democrat: Staley's six-year extension, through the 2017 season,
includes $40 million of "new money." The contract includes $16 million guaranteed. The total
package can fluctuate $3 million up ($43 million) or $3 million down ($37 million), depending on
Staley's performance and whether he remains healthy.
Some of the other details of the contract are interesting. Staley, according to the source, will not
receive a signing bonus. Signing bonuses are prorated for the life of a contract for salary-cap
purposes. Instead, Staley will receive two roster bonuses, which count immediately against that
year's cap.
The reason the 49ers would structure the deal in that way is because they have an abundance of
salary-cap space. The 49ers were approximately $25 million under the cap before the Staley
extension. Staley's 2009 cap figure, with this new deal, rises from $1.42 million to $11.6 million.
Mike Sando, ESPN: Their new contract for tackle Joe Staley carries a $12.2 million roster bonus
in 2009. The full $12.2 million counts against the 2009 cap, contributing to a 2009 cap charge
north of $13.5 million.
Mike Sando, ESPN: Staley's deal becomes quite cap friendly after the initial $13.5 million charge
in the first year… The deal counts nearly $6.8 million in 2010 and then between $2 million and
$.9 million over the next three seasons.
Cam Inman, Mercury News: Staley picked up an additional $12 million with his two-year
extension Thursday… Staley’s deal apparently does not adversely affect the 49ers’ 2014 cap
space, which stood at $5.9 million… Staley’s extension includes a $6 million bonus in 2015, a $4
million bonus in 2016 and a $2 million raise in 2017… His 2014 pay remains the same: a $2.7
million base salary, a $200,000 bonus from offseason workouts and $500,000 in per-game roster
bonuses, according to a source.

AP: they renegotiated 1993 salaries to increase payments that won't come under the cap. Wide
receiver John Taylor got $7.74 million for four years…
Rachel Shuster, USA Today: A day after the San Francisco 49ers waived John Taylor to create
salary-cap flexibility, the nine-year wide receiver is back in the fold - for a $200,000 signing
bonus and a 1995 base salary of $300,000. But incentives could boost that. His 1996 salary
would be $1.35 million.

Matt Barrows, Sacramento Bee: Brian Westbrook's one-year deal with the 49ers includes $1.25
million guaranteed. What's interesting - to me, at least - is how the incentive portion of the
contract is laid out in different categories. Westbrook essentially can double his guaranteed
money this year. But as you'll see, that will be difficult to do as Frank Gore's backup.
Total yards: If Westbrook finishes with 400 total yards, he'll earn another $75,000. This seems to
be a likely-to-be-earned incentive considering that Westbrook had 455 total yards last year in an
injury-shortened season. If he finishes with 600 total yards, the bonus goes to $150,000.
Anything above 700 total yards, it's a $200,000 bonus.
Receptions: Westbrook has had as many as 90 and as few as 25 catches in the last four seasons.
If he finishes with 40 receptions, he'll earn another $125,000. There were 17 running backs last
year who had 40 or more catches. With 50 catches, it's another $250,000. If Westbrook couples
40 catches with eight 49ers wins, he gets $187,500. If there are eight 49ers wins and 50
Westbrook catches, he gets the maximum in that category -- $375,000 . Westbrook had more
than 50 catches from 2004 to 2008. However, that was in a West Coast offense in which he was
the featured runner.
Touchdowns: Westbrook has scored as many as 13 combined touchdowns (2008) and as few as
two (2009) since his rookie season. If he scores four this year, he'll get another $62,500. If it's
six, he gets $125,000. The maximum he can get is $187,500 for 10 or more touchdowns. He's
had 10 or more TDs four times in eight seasons.
Westbrook also has 53-man roster bonuses up to $250,000 and 45-man roster bonuses of up to
$250,000. Westbrook has never played in all 16 games in his career.

Extension details from JI Halsell, FO (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/under-cap/2010/undercap-30-percent-rule): To increase the value of the contract to a level fit for a premier linebacker,
contract years 2014-2016 contain easily achievable escalators totaling slightly under $10.1
million. To achieve these escalators, the 49ers defense must improve its year-over-year ranking
in any CBA approved defensive category, and this improvement only needs to occur once for
achievement.
Signing Bonus $15.5 million
2011 Supercede Signing Bonus $4.8 million
2014 P5 Escalator $2.385 million
2015 P5 Escalator $3.667 million
2016 P5 Escalator $4.039 million
Andrew Brandt, NFP: The 53.3M of the deal is in the following form: 23M in 30% increase
money; 20.3M in signing bonus and supersede money; 10M in easily-earned escalators. The
29M guarantee for Willis is in the following form: 15.5M signing bonus; 4.8M supersede bonus
(see below); 8.7M in future salary guarantees (injury only). The 49ers can still only increase the
numbers year to year of 30 percent based on the 2009 number of $1.66M ($498,000).
The way the numbers continue to rise in this deal is through one-time NLTBE (not likely to be
earned) incentive amounts with minimum performance thresholds that are also not part of the
30 percent calculations. There are 10M of such escalators in the deal, all in the final three years.
While this money is not “guaranteed” in a literal sense, it’s as close as you can get while keeping
it out of the calculations.
Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Patrick Willis' $450,000 increase [in 2011] is tied to
incentives from his rookie contract.
Joel Corry, NFP: Willis’ restructuring of his five-year, $50 million contract extension (with $29
million in guarantees) in 2011 increased this year’s cap number by $10,640,240 even though his
$3.604 million salary didn’t change. A clause allowing him to void his 2013-2016 contract years
at his discretion was added where the 49ers can buy them back for $1,000. Since the contract’s
voiding is within Willis’ sole control, the proration from those years accelerated into this year’s
cap. As a consequence of the restructuring, his 2013 cap number dropped to $3,605,125.
Matt Maiocco, CSN Bay Area: Willis agreed to have $1.687 million of his scheduled 2013 base
salary of $2.4 million converted to a signing bonus that can be prorated over the final four years
of Willis' contract. His new 2013 base salary of $715,000 also becomes fully guaranteed.

Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: He will sign a five-year contract worth $3.357 million. The deal includes a
signing bonus of $1.275 million and annual base salaries of $277,700 (2001). $347,125 (2002),
$416,550 (2003), $485,975 (2004) and $555,400 (2005). The cap value for 2001 is $532,700. The
fifth year of the deal will void if Winborn plays just 15 percent of the defensive snaps during his
rookie season.
Lee Woodall
Ira Miller, SF Chronicle: his salary cap number includes $11,000 from a $33,000 signing bonus he
got as a rookie, $200,000 from a $1 million bonus he got last year, and $50,000 from a $250,000
bonus he got this year. So while his base salary in 1996 is $200,000 and his salary cap figure is
$461,000, he actually is being paid $450,000 this year.

list, according to former NFL agent Joel Corry, who writes for CBS Sports. Wright, who has a
$715,001 base salary, will earn about $42,000 per week when he’s active.
Matt Maiocco, CSN Bay Area: Wright signed a one-year, $900,000 contract, a source told
CSNBayArea.com. There was no signing bonus, but he is scheduled to receive a $20,000
reporting bonus. He'll also earn a $25,000 roster bonus if he's on the 53-man roster to open the
season. His base salary is $855,000, but he'll count just $590,000 against the 49ers' cap due to
the minimum salary benefit. He also can make $20,000 in not-likely-to-be-earned incentives
attached to play time.

NY Times: the Buccaneers received San Francisco's second- and fourth-round picks in next
Tuesday's National Football League draft - No. 50 and No. 106 over all - as well as an unspecified
amount of cash that will reimburse the club for a signing bonus it paid Young in 1985.
Jarrett Bell, USA Today: Young formally signed a five-year contract worth $26.75 million… The
deal pays Young $5.75 million this year…
Ira Miller, SF Chronicle: Young is entering the last year of a contract that will pay him $4.5
million in salary this season and count $5 million against the salary cap.
AP: The 49ers made Young the NFL's highest-paid player, signing him to a six-year, $45 million
contract extension… Young's contract -- actually an extension of the deal that was to pay him
$4.5 million this season -- cleared $1.5 million in room under this season's salary cap because
Young's base salary for 1997 is now $3 million… The non-guaranteed contract, which contains
no signing bonus, includes a onetime, $1 million incentive if Young leads the 49ers to a Super
Bowl victory and handles 75 percent of the snaps during that season. Young is scheduled to
make $3 million this season, $10 million in 1998, $8.275 million in 1999, $6.550 million in 2000,
$7.825 million in 2001 and $9.350 million in 2002 should he complete the life of the contract.
Clark Judge, San Jose Mercury News: That they can go anywhere is the result of last-minute
negotiating that featured a six-year, $49.175 million deal for Young… Young, who under the
terms of a contract signed last summer had a $10 million cap figure for 1998, reduced that
figure dramatically by taking a $7.5 million signing bonus, $2 million in base pay and a $500,000
roster bonus that agent Leigh Steinberg said will be deferred until next year. Young will earn
$6.25 million in 1999, $6 million in 2000, $7.575 million in 2001, $9.35 million in 2002 and $10
million in 2003.
Ira Miller, SF Chronicle: His cap figure this year is $8.25 million. The team surely will have to
restructure his contract to reduce that figure. That will only add to the $4.5 million in signing
bonus money still to be accounted for in the year 2000 and beyond.
Nancy Gay, SF Chronicle: Young, the team's top salary-cap commitment, agreed to a new
contract that reduces his 2000 base salary from $6 million to the minimum $2.25 million. He'll
also receive a reporting bonus of $900,000 and could earn $4 million in incentives. The new
deal runs through 2003 and reduces Young's cap figure from $8.1 million to $5.1 million.
AP: Walsh added that the 49ers will go ahead and pay Young a $1 million roster bonus that is
due tomorrow. [2000]
