ADHD By AJ What is ADHD? • ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. • Characterized by a pattern of inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity • Causes kids that have it to act differently to instructions and situations. • Is one of the most common childhood disorders How does ADHD affect Teenagers? ADHD affects teenagers in different ways. They can become easily distracted, miss details, forget things and often switch from one activity to another. ADHD can also make kids bored in a matter of minutes unless it’s something they enjoy doing. They also have bad organization, trouble completing homework and often lose things. Interesting Facts • Boys are three times more likely to have ADHD than girls. • No one knows what causes ADHD (It is related to the “wiring” in the brain) • 5-16% of school aged students have ADHD • You are born with ADHD • You can take medicine to improve some of the symptoms • Medicine can cause sleeping problems, headaches, weight loss etc • More than 4 million kids in America have ADHD Why is this topic important? • It affects many people and some people we all know. • ADHD is important at school because it affects how students learn. • I wanted people to be more aware of different peoples’ learning styles and needs and the different effects of ADHD. Why did I pick this topic? • I also picked this because some of my family have ADHD. • Just because people have ADHD and school may be hard for them, it does not mean that they cannot be successful in life.
