Determining Credibility of
Sources (Online)
Why is it Important to
Evaluate Credibility?
• When a writer uses a book or published article as a source in a
research paper, there are not many questions to ask about the
credibility of that source. Many editors have gone through the
evaluation process before publication. Using books and the
library databases as your first line of research options is a good
strategy.
• The Web, however, is different. Anyone can put any
information on the Web, and sometimes information looks
more credible at first glance than it is on closer inspection.
• Ask yourself, "Is this source credible?" every time you
choose a Web source. This is especially true of sources with
no author or organizational affiliation. You will likely have to
navigate to the homepage of the site to judge its credibility

Sites that appear to be news media but aren't
• Examiner.com - the content is by amateur writers and lacks editorial
oversight (not to be confused with the San Francisco Examiner) (see

• Associated Content (not to be confused with the Associated Press)
• Articlesnatch.com
• The Onion - in a few high profile incidents this satirical news site
was mistaken for news media by non-English countries

Scholarly journals
Scholarly journals are normally reliable sources, but some journals have a reputation
for bias or unreliability. QuackWatch has a list of non-recommended periodicals,
however, a short list of journals which should be used with extreme caution include:
• Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons (JPandS), publishes from an
unscientific, right-wing viewpoint
• Rivista di Biologia, edited by Giuseppe Sermonti, noted for publishing fringe
theories
• Medical Hypotheses, non-peer reviewed and known for unscientific content
• Energy & Environment, edited by and published in by climate change skeptics
• Medical Veritas: The Journal of Medical Truth, published by Medical Veritas
International Inc., listed by Quackwatch as a "questionable organization".[1]
• Mankind Quarterly

nurtured, but I just cannot seem to get anyone’s attention no matter
how much effort I put into it. ……
• Have you ever seen an image that is so unique it makes you want to
question its meaning more deeply?
Great Opening Lines
• When you look at a person from the outside, you see

Great Opening Lines
• Put title of painting in quotation marks:
"Still Life with Geraniums" (Matisse, 1910) is one of the most
