Exploration and Production Overview Exploration and Production (E&P) explores, develops and produces oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids throughout the world. In addition to Petrophysics, engineering disciplines include drilling, reservoir, production, completion, process, and facilities engineering. Position Summary The full-time positions are in ConocoPhillips E&P organization. Petrophysicists play a critical role in the discovery, assessment, development, and production of hydrocarbons within ConocoPhillips. The primary task of a petrophysicist is to assess the hydrocarbon presence and production potential of various strata encountered during drilling, as described in more detail below. Because of the breadth of the task, graduates from many academic backgrounds work as petrophysicists, including geologists, geophysicists, and all types of engineers, physicists, and mathematicians. The opportunity exists to work on new and emerging technologies as well as new and particularly challenging types of reservoirs, from assessing the use of MRI technology when run in a wellbore, deployment of fiber optics to assess a well's performance, through developing methods to assess "unconventional reservoirs" like gas shales. Petrophysicists work closely with team members from other disciplines, including geoscientists and engineers, to help the company make the best business decisions, as integration of many diverse data types becomes critical in supporting the interpretation or analysis. Responsibilities Typical duties of a new E&P petrophysicist may include: Interpreting well log data, obtained from running instruments in a wellbore, to assess the properties of the penetrated formations for the presence, volume, and production potential of hydrocarbons Working with analysis of core material (rock samples obtained from the wellbore) to support the interpretation of the well log data Developing the well logging program in support of new well drilling Working with geophysicists to calibrate the response of seismic data with well log data Performing scoping studies on new exploration, development, or enhanced recovery opportunities Assessing new technologies with field trials Surveillance/monitoring of producing wells and working with production engineers in repair and remediation recommendations, or in developing new/better completion methods for wells. Representing the company while working with partners and government representatives.
