FETAL PIG DISSECTION PRE-VIEW Go to the following website: https://www.whitman.edu/academics/departments-and-programs/biology/virtual-pig Click on the ANATOMICAL REFERENCES and glance at each of the headings to answer these questions. 1. How are the anterior and posterior regions different on the pig body than they are on the human body? SEXING YOUR PIG 2. How will you know whether your pig is a male or female when examining the external anatomy. Name the structures and their locations that will help you sex your pig. THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM 3. In the head region you will observe the hard and soft palates. Explain why the different textured palates are both necessary for digestive functions to begin. 4. Sketch the pig and the cuts that you will need to make in order to reveal the abdominal structures. 5. Which structures will be exposed first after cutting into the abdominal cavity? THE EXCRETORY SYSTEM 6. Where are the excretory structures found? Name the cavity and use directional terms and other structures as points of reference. 7. Where is the bladder? THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM 8. Go back to your sketch of the pig in question 4 and add the cuts you will need to make in order to reveal the structures of the circulatory system. 9. What structures will you see once you cut into the thoracic cavity? 10. Describe the location of the lungs to the heart and the atria to the ventricles. Use you’re A&P vocabulary! THE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM 11. What internal structures will you be able to reveal in a male pig? 12. What about a female pig? THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM 13. How will you know the trachea from the esophagus? 14. List the structures that move air from the trachea into the lungs. THE NERVOUS SYSTEM I’m considering this. Check it out and we’ll talk. QUIZZES Not now, but great to know about for review! I HOPE YOU’RE READY NOW! ;) Don’t forget CLOSE TOED SHOES for dissection and something to pull the hair back with. Thanks!
