OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS SETON HALL UNIVERISTY 400 South Orange Avenue, South Orange, NJ 07079 Phone: (973) 761-9072/9081; Fax: (973) 275-2383 Email: oip@shu.edu; Website: http://www.shu.edu/offices/international-programs/index.cfm IMPORTANT INFORMATION YOU SHOULD KNOW: 123- DO NOT enter the U.S. with a B-1/B-2 visa because B visitors are prohibited by U.S. law from pursuing a course of study prior to obtaining a change of status to F-1 Student. B Visitors and F-2 dependents must obtain an I-20 and apply for a change of status to F-1 student to pursue a course of study that is not vocational or recreational in nature. You need a form I-20 to obtain an F-1 student visa or status, or to keep lawful F-1 status when transferring or changing schools within the U.S. Do not enter the United States earlier than 30 days before the program start date. APPLICATION FOR A FORM I-20 INSTRUCTIONS You may email, fax or mail your documents to our office. DO NOT send originals. Please complete the application LEGIBLY and provide us with your e-mail, as this is the best way of communication between our office and yourself. We strongly recommend that you apply for an I-20 at the same time as you are applying to the University, so that your I-20 will be issued soon after and if you are granted acceptance. Requirements of obtaining an I-20 as per U.S. law: o Must be a “bona fide” student (accepted to a full-time program of study) o Must prove that you can support the costs of living and studying in the U.S. for each year of the program of study. If you are currently studying in the United States and intend to transfer to Seton Hall University you MUST complete the attached Transfer of Visa Sponsorship Form. If you are in the United States on Optional Practical Training, filing for a change of status or you need to do a reinstatement please contact our office and set up an appointment for further instructions. Your financial support can come from any combination of the following sources in the U.S. or abroad: personal (own resources), sponsor (parents, relatives, friends, organizations, etc.) outside scholarships and/or funds from Seton Hall University (scholarships, assistantships, or fellowships). It is highly recommended that at least part of your financial support come from your home country. This is important for proving home country ties during your visa interview. A sponsor should promise only as much money as he or she is able to give you every year. The amount your sponsor promises to provide you with must be reflected in their bank statement balance. No company bank statements are accepted. The bank statement MUST be in the name of the sponsor and must show a statement of withdrawals and deposits. We cannot accept bank statements that do not specify monthly withdrawals and deposits. If the bank statement is in the name of more than one person, each individual must complete the Sworn Promise of Cash Support. All documents submitted MUST be: less than three (3) months old, in USD and in English. Please submit photocopies or faxes of your documents, as you will need the originals of ALL the documents you have sent us during your visa interview at the U.S. Embassy. If there is no proof of income submitted, bank statements must prove that there are sufficient funds to cover the entire program of study. Statement balances will be totaled and divided by the number of years in your program of study to determine the amount available to you for each year. A company’s income is NOT the income of the owner of the business and will not be accepted as proof of income. You must provide an official statement of the salary paid to the owner/sponsor. Sponsors of free room and board must submit the following documents: o Proof of Income (photocopy of pay stub, bank statement) o Proof of Address (photocopy of lease, deed, rent receipts, utility bill or bank statement) If you plan to live on-campus, please submit your housing application and deposit as soon as possible due to limited space. We will send you further instructions on how to apply for housing once your I-20 has been issued. If you are issued an I-20, we will mail your I-20 to the address indicated on your application along with instructions on further steps. Please contact our office for further questions and/or concerns.
