Ciconia-Ismarus (Thrace) • You can visit the city where Ulysses went and bullied the Ciconian citizens. • Stroll the beach where Ulysses had a feast and was chased away from. • Ulysses was a bully for the three days he spent there. Ciconia-Ismarus Now (Thrace) • Thracian Tomb of Sveshtari • Discovered in 1981 near the village of Sveshtari. This tomb reflects the structural principles of Thracian buildings. This temple has very unique décor. • Thracian was in contact with the Hellenistic and Hyperborean worlds, according to ancient geographers. WARNING-DO NOT ROB THE PEOPLE!!! Lotus Land – Western Coast of Africa • Ulysses and his men came upon an island, that contained beautiful purple flowers. • The flowers made everyone sleep, Ulysses eventually realizes that the flowers make you sleep. • Ulysses ends up having to carrying all of his men back to the ship before they slept forever. • Ulysses is at the island because his ship was blown to the island. • His goal was to get his men back on the ship unharmed. • Within Ulysses three days of being here, he learned to fight addiction. Lotus Land – Western Coast of Africa (Now) • Here you can pick the flowers, but please do not eat them. • You can see and walk on the beach where Ulysses men slept. • You can talk to the local tribe that Ulysses and his men were greeted by. WARNING-DO NOT EAT THE FLOWERS UNLESS YOU WANT TO SLEEP THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!!! Cyclops Island • At the Cyclops Cave Ulysses accomplished of blinding the Cyclops, Polyphemus, and saving most of his men from being eaten. • Ulysses was there to get food and water because his ships were running low on supplies. • Ulysses learned not to show hubris because when he did Polyphemus sent Poseidon after him. • Ulysses was here for a day. Cyclops Cave Now • There is a black rock known as Volakas. It is believed to be the rock that Polyphemus hurled at Ulysses after he had blinded him. • You can visit the rock and you can also visit and get a tour of the cave. • Here you can visit the cave that Ulysses and his men had to escape from Polyphemus. WARNING-DO NOT ENTER THE CAVE!!! Keeper of the Winds (Island of Aeolus Aeolia) • Aeolus lives on this island called Aiolia. • Ulysses accomplished recieveing a bag full of winds and a ride on the west wind home from Aeolus. • Ulysses was pushed through Aeolus’s bronze gates and ended up receiving wind. • Ulysses learned that not be a hog. • Ulysses was here for a day. Keeper of the Winds (Aeolia Now) • The location of Aeolus's island has been argued, if it is near Sicily, on a mountain, or at Gramvousa off the north west coast of Crete. • You can approach the bronze gates that protect the island. • You may see the magic bag of winds that Ulysses held, but his men ripped it apart. • You can visit the castle and see the winds in action. WARNING-DO NOT OPEN THE BAG OF WINDS!!! Island of the Racing Sun (Cannibal Beach) • Ulysses accomplished fixing his boats that had been damaged. • Ulysses goal was to fix his boats. • Ulysses learned if you have to get something done you have to do it yourself. • Ulysses was here for about a day and a half. Island of the Racing Sun (Paximadia) • According to legend it is the birth place of Apollo and Artemis. • You can go diving by boat and then have a BBQ. • You can walk around and explore the land. • You can see the campsite Ulysses men were building before they made a run for it. WARNING-DO NOT CLIMB THE TREES!!! Circe (Aeaea) • Ulysses accomplished gaining food and turning men from pigs to human. • Ulysses goal was to get more supplies. • Ulysses learned to not give into greed. • Ulysses was here for many days which was not clearly stated in the book. Circe (Aeaea Now) • The cave of Circe still lies here and is known as “Grotta della Maga Circe. ” • Here you can see and tour the castle. • You can pet her friendly lions and wolves. • If you can find Circe ask her if Ulysses ever came to this island. WARNING-DO NOT EAT THE FOOD!!! Land of the Dead (Hall of Hades) • Ulysses accomplisehed making his way to the Land of the Dead. • The Land of the Dead is outside of the Mediterranean Sea. • Ulysses goal was to go the Land of the Dead because Circe told him to. • Ulysses was here for less than a day. Land of the Dead (Hall of Hades Now) • The first region of the Land of the Dead is the Fields of Asphodel. • Ulysses here visited his fallen war heroes and family. You can ask the dead if Ulysses was actually here. • You can see Orion hunting, Minos judging, and you can dance with heroes in the Fields of Asphodel. WARNING-DO NOT GO THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE!!! Sirens • Ulysses accomplished getting away safely and not losing any crew members. • Ulysses had to pass the rocks to get to the island of Thrinacia. • Ulysses learned not to give into temptation. • Ulysses did not stay here, he was just a passing by, but it took him about fifteen minutes. Sirens (Now) • The sirens live on an island called Anthemoessa. • You can see the shore of the Sirens that Ulysses was trying to avoid. • You might be able to hear the Sirens beautiful song. • You can go to the Pythagorio Village. WARNING-STUFF YOUR EARS WITH COTTON!!! Scylla and Charybdis • Ulysses accomplished getting through the narrow strait, but with only six loses. • Ulysses just needed to get past. • Ulysses learned not everything goes as planned. • Ulysses was here for about 10 minutes. Scylla and Charybdis (Now) • Scylla and Charybdis live on opposite ends on Strait of Messina between Italy and Sicily. • You can go to the caves where Scylla and Charybdis were located. • You can go on a tour. • If you happen to see Scylla or Charybdis ask them if Ulysses was there. WARNING-DO NOT GO NEAR THE BIG ROCKS!!! Sun God’s Island (Thrinacia) • Ulysses accomplished not dying when the ship was struck with lightening and all the other crew members died. • Ulysses is here to get food, water, and because it was the island of Thrinacia, this was Ulysses goal to Ulysses was here for 31 days and 30 nights. • Ulysses learned not believe his men especially when they have betrayed him before. Sun God’s Island (Thrinacia Now) • You can search for the golden cattle that the men ate. • You can find the dead moving cow skin. • You can see and hike on Mount Etna. • You can see the Temple of Concord. WARNING-DO NOT EAT THE GOLDEN CATTLE!!! Calypso’s Island (Ogygia) • Ulysses accomplished learning what was going on home back in Ithaca. • Ulysses is here because after the boat got destroyed Ulysses and his raft floated here. • Ulysses was here for seven years. • Ulysses learned that he needed to get home fast to help his family. Calypso’s Island ( Gozo Now) • Gozo is an island of the Maltese archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. • You can visit the Calypso Cave, but you can not go in. • You can see the Azure Window. • You can also go scuba diving. WARNING-DO NOT TELL HER YOU ARE LEAVING!!! Nausica’s Island (Phaecia) • Ulysses accomplished getting a ride home back to Ithaca. • Ulysses is here because he washed ashore because of the storm Poseidon had caused. • Ulysses was here for two days. • Ulysses learned to treat people nicely. Nausica’s Island (Phaecia Now) • Corfu is the island of Nausica WARNING-DO NOT ENGAGE IN also know as Phaecia. ANY ACTIVITIES!!! • You can visit Greek temples. • You can walk the ancient streets of the Roman village of Kassiopi. • Tradition says the “Potiknissi” is the ship which, was returning from Ithaca after dropping Ulysses off, which was petrified by Poseidon. Ithaca • This is home of Ulysses, Penelope, his wife, and Telemachus, his son. • Ulysses accomplished returning home, killing off the suitors, and getting to live with his wife Penelope and son Telemachus. • Ulysses is here to regain his throne and his family. • Ulysses returned home and stays here. • Ulysses learned that home does not always feel like home till you make it feel like home. Ithaca, Greece (Now) • You can visit Ulysses tomb and see the palace. • You can see the natural landmark, Fountain of Arethousa. • You can also go to the restaurant, Yefuri. • And take a stroll through the village of Kioni.
