Important Passages from Gordon Korman’s Schooled: My Response: EXAMPLE: EXAMPLE: Rain to Capricorn: “We always try to save the world. But sometimes the world doesn’t want to be saved.” In my own words, this quote means... Capricorn has grown up in a very different place from the peers at his new school. As a result, he does not understand why everyone won’t accept and appreciate his help. Rain is trying to help Cap understand that people come from different perspectives, and it affects their views of the world. Capricorn Anderson: “Rain would have been pleased. That was the whole point of the community – to allow us to escape the money-hungry rat race of modern society. If people didn’t know us, they couldn’t find us, and we could live our lives in peace. . . I was homeschooled . . . We wanted to avoid the low standards and cultural poison of a world that had lost its way” (Chapter 1). This quote explains the setting of Capricorn’s childhood as “an alternative farm commune” in the following ways... Hugh about Capricorn: “He wasn’t nerdy in a typical way. He wasn’t a computer geek or captain of the chess club (that was me). He couldn’t speak Klingon; in fact, he’d never even heard of Star Trek. But just one peek at the guy and you knew that, dweebwise, there was a new sheriff in town” (Chapter 5). In this passage, the reader learns the following things about Hugh... Naomi: “To be honest, I couldn’t explain it either. Cap was weird, but there was more to it than that. There was something mysterious and strong. Not muscle strong or fighting strong – a kind of strength that gave him the self-control to meditate instead of falling apart, or to ignore what other people thought, and find meaning in a dead bird” (Chapter 10). Naomi’s perspective of Capricorn differs from Hugh’s because... Hugh on the bus with Capricorn: “The first projectile came sailing up the aisle, spinning like a miniature torch. The Winkleman Encyclopedia of Bullying Techniques identified it instantly. A bunch of jerks at the back were flicking lit matches at Cap. I brushed it from the seat, genuinely alarmed. This may have been business as usual in my life, but I had short hair. Cap’s flyaway mop was a forest fire waiting to happen” (Chapter 11). This conflict shows that Hugh’s identity is affected by his peers because... This shows that her character is... Rain to Capricorn: “That’s society for you, Cap. Following rules is more important than living your life. The law says you can’t drive until you’re sixteen. So if somebody does it, it’s a huge deal. You should feel sorry for these poor kids. They’re prisoners, and they don’t even know it” (Chapter 14). Rain’s perspective on society has affected Capricorn in the following ways... Darryl to Zach: “You shouldn’t be so hard on Cap,” Darryl told me. “Sure he’s weird, but he’s the best eighth grade president we’ve ever had.” “Eighth grade president isn’t a real job,” I seethed. “It’s a joke, remember?” “Well, maybe it started that way,” Naomi said earnestly. “But Cap Anderson is the most amazing person I’ve ever known” (Chapter 19). Darryl and Naomi are changing because... As you continue to Schooled, please select your own important quote about acceptance and write it below. Please include the page number. I wondered if I’d ever be happy again. I knew I didn’t fit in at C Average, but Garland wasn’t exactly right for me either” (Chapter 31). Capricorn Anderson: “I didn’t regret my time in real school. I learned a lot...the most important thing I learned is how many things out there I still needed to learn about. I wanted to, but it didn’t seem like I was going to get the chance” (Chapter 31). This is an example of how Capricorn has changed over the course of the novel because... This quote connects to the title of the book Schooled because…
