III- Reading Comprehension
1- Read the following passage and answer the questions:
There was once a parrot for sale in a pet shop. It was a beautiful red and
blue parrot. It sat on a perch in the middle of the shop, so that everyone could see
it. The owner was very proud of it and wanted to sell it at a high price.
One day, a man went into the shop. "That's a beautiful bird," he said to the
pet shop owner, "but why is it so expensive?"
"It is expensive because it can talk," the pet shop owner said.
"I see. How can I make it talk?" he asked.
The pet shop owner asked him, "Do you see those strings tied to each of the
parrot's legs?"
"Yes," the man said.
"If you pull those strings, the parrot will talk." The shop owner said.
The man asked, "Do you mind if I try?"
"Not at all," the pet shop owner said. The man walked to the parrot and pulled the
string on its left leg. The parrot said, "Good morning."
The man pulled the string on the parrot's right leg. This time the parrot said,
"How are you today?"
"That's not very interesting," said the man. "Any parrot could do that!" Then he
laughed, "But what would happen if I pulled both strings at the same time?"

2- Read the following passage and answer the questions:
The scientists say that our environment is in BIG trouble. They say that
pollution is getting worse and worse. Pollution blocks out the sun, while rubbish
makes the city look terrible and is a home for rats and disease. You can try to reuse paper and plastic. You can wash off plastic utensils and use them again. Each
tone of recycled paper saves 17 trees from destruction. Each time you don't throw
something in the rubbish, think of a way it can be re-used. It saves trees and
reduces pollution.
In many countries, people must recycle their rubbish. That means they must
put their rubbish in three different bags: one bag for cans, one bag for plastic and
the last one for glass. The aluminum from cans of coca-cola you drink will help
make new cans. Plastic bottles can be recycled, and are made into many different
things including polyester carpets. Glass does not lose its strength no matter no
matter how many times it is recycled.
You are the future of our planet and it is up to you to help save our natural
resources. There are companies which will help you decide what to recycle and
what to throw away. The Internet has information on recycling. The more we
recycle, the healthier our planet will be.
A) Answer the questions:
1. What does pollution do?
………………………………………………………………………………
2. What type of things can be recycled?
………………………………………………………………………………
3. Why do some people put their rubbish into three bags?
……………………………………………………………………………………
…………………………………………………………………………
B) Choose the correct answer:
4. (Paper – Plastic – Glass) does not lose its strength even if you recycle it one
hundred times.
5. Another word for rubbish is (litter – earth – trees).
6. Natural resources are (trees and fuel – plastic – planet).

The history of mobile phones
rd
On 3 April 1973, Martin Cooper from Motorola company talked on his
mobile phone as he walked through the streets of New York. People watched
with excitement and amazement. At that time, even normal phones were attached
by wires, and people had never seen anything like it before! It was the world's
first mobile call. The phone weighed 850 grams! It was very heavy! Now, mobile
phones weigh 130 grams.
In 1970's, mobile phone technology was still experimental. Mobiles weren't
available to the public until 1983, when the first mobile phone was created. It
was huge – 32 cm long and 9 cm wide! It took ten hours to charge the battery and
you could only talk for 30 minutes. It was also expensive. Only very rich people
could buy one.
Martin Cooper had a dream of people taking their mobile phones with
them, and being able to communicate wherever they were. However, by the end
of the year 2000, mobiles were cheap enough for everybody to buy. They were
also much smaller and looked much better than the first mobile.
Mobile phones have changed a lot since the 1980's. We can use them to
take photos, watch videos, surf the Internet and do many other things. Today,
there are billions of mobile phones in the world. Life would be very different
without mobile phones – they have really changed the world.

1. Who made the world's first mobile call? When was that?

3. What things can we do with our mobiles today?

4- Read the following passage and answer the questions:
The Pencil
We all have pencils in our schoolbags and in our homes, but do you know
how they are made?
A pencil is usually made of wood, with pencil lead inside. Pencil lead is a
black material. It is made of graphite which is mixed with clay. The mixture is
pressed into thin rods to form the centre of the pencil. The thin rod is the part of
the pencil that leaves marks on the paper when we write. The wooden part
outside is the part that we hold. We need the wooden part so the pencil lead
doesn't break and so our hands don't get black when we write!
People first discovered the use of graphite for writing in the 16th century.
Early pencils from this time were just pieces of graphite wrapped in sheep skin or
string. But today, wooden pencils are made by machines in factories. Pencils are
also made of plastic or metal, and they sometimes have cartridges filled with
lead. There are even pencils with different colours! There are also pencils that
can write underwater!
Pencils are used all around the world. More than 14 billion pencils are
made in the world every year.
A) Answer the questions:
1. What is a pencil made of?
………………………………………………………………………………
2. Why do we need the wooden part of the pencil? (two reasons)
