Procedure:
DAY 1:
1. The teacher will introduce the lesson on Puerto Rico by having the students
complete a KWL chart about what they know about Puerto Rico and what
they want to find out. They will first complete only the “K” and “W”.
2. The students will then gain a better understanding of Puerto Rico via
viewing a short video from www.discoveryeducation.com
3. During the video the students will complete a worksheet with questions from
the video.
4. Once the video is over, the students will turn to page 187 in the Realidades I
Spanish textbooks and first read the pages silently. After about 5 minutes of
silent reading, the students will work with the person to their right. They
will re-read page 187, and answer the comprehension questions together.
5. TAREA: (homework) – the students are to make sure they have all the
questions answered from the video sheet and from their textbooks. If they
didn’t get all the answers on the video worksheet, they can re-watch the
video on my wiki.
DAY 2:
1. The teacher will have the students’ popcorn read the Puerto Rico article from
the book and we will discuss the questions together.
2. The teacher will then pass out the Puerto Rico web scavenger hunt and direct
the students, explaining a jigsaw activity. The teacher will pass out the web
scavenger hunt questions that they will complete during this activity.
3. Next, the students will then count off from 1-10, until everyone has a
number. Once everyone has a number, the teacher will direct the students to
circle their assigned number on their question sheet.
4. Then, the teacher and students will go to the computer lab and the teacher
will direct the students on how to find the PowerPoint for the web scavenger
hunt on her Wiki. Once all students have accessed the PowerPoint, the
students should answer their question. They should make sure they have
become “experts” on their topic because they will then teach the class about
their question ONLY!
5. Once all students have completed their question, we will go around the room
and they students will educate each other about Puerto Rico.
6. Before the students leave they MUST complete the “L” from their KWL chart
and hand it in as an exit slip.
7. TAREA: (homework) – the students will complete the crossword puzzle from
discovery education for homework.
