Reading Objectives: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday students will read independently, guided
reading will be used in group novel literacy circles, and the class will read together a whole to
develop reading comprehension, speaking and language skills, and vocabulary building. Students
will be required to take notes, summarize, complete vocabulary activities, use graphic organizers,
work independent, work in pairs, and work in groups. Students will read and analyze newspaper
articles completing 5 w’s graphic organizers. Students will continue reading nonfiction novel
units, and begin poetry and drama unit.
Writing Objectives: Students will focus on writing Tuesday and Thursday. This quarter the 8th
grade will be writing a term paper. They will develop a thesis statement and use citations and
research to back up their statement. The final project will be due in May including reference
page. The 7th grade will focus on creating life project power points and debate writing. They will
research and fill out organizer based on life decisions and create power points that will be
presented before the class in April. They will work in teams to prepare an organized debate and
will compete against each other in May. They will use common core workbook to further
enhance common core writing skills and reading comprehension skills Students will continue to
complete writing homework to enhance grammar, sentence structure, paragraph structure,
spelling, and critical thinking skills.
Speaking, Listening, and Language Objectives: Throughout the week students will read out
loud and listen to others read out loud (oral book reports, reading in reader’s handbook, and
reading class novel). Students will take comprehensive notes. Students will work in groups and
discuss literary elements of nonfiction. Students will use critical thinking and questioning.
Language: Throughout the week students will use context clues to determine multiple meanings
of words. Students will refine knowledge of figurative language, figures of speech, synonyms,
antonyms, and extended interpretation of vocabulary.
Assessments: Exit slip will be used after reading short stories on Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday by answering a series of questions or defining vocabulary words. Language Arts
homework is assigned every night. Exit slips will be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday by
summarizing literary novel chapters. Exit slip review sheets will be used to assess
comprehension of any literary based movie. Graphic organizers will be used to contrast and
compare novel units to theatrical version. Writing assessments will be obtained through Tuesday
and Thursday individual and group writing projects. Spelling and vocabulary tests will be given
every other Thursday based on discussion words from novel units and literary terms. Reading
tests will be given on alternate Thursdays based on The Reader’s Handbook unit reviewed. This
week’s spelling/vocabulary test will be based on the 3rd set of novel unit words. Administer
