school seniors each year. Across the country, NWTF chapters have

A contestant must register with their American Legion Oratorical Zone
Chairman by January 2, 2012 (see the last page of the program
information sheets for your Zone Chairman). Your Zone Chairman will
notify you of the dates, times and locations of all contests at the District and
Zone level. All Zone contests will be conducted before Monday, January 30,
2012 and the Department contest will be conducted on Saturday, February
25, 2012.

Spirit Award
Award - $5000 Dr. Seuss's College Scholarship recognizes a high school
senior that understands and values the limitless possibilities that education
can offer with a scholarship award. Applications can be found in the Career

The Presidential Scholarships are Montana State University's most
prestigious freshman awards, recognizing academic achievement as well as
special personal qualities. Forty finalists will be interviewed on campus, and
all finalists will be offered at least a renewable tuition waiver starting in the
Fall of 2010, worth $20,000 for Montana residents, and $60,000 for nonresidents. Up to twenty will be awarded the Presidential Scholarship, which
includes a generous annual stipend along with the tuition waiver. Scholars
who maintain the required academic standards may expect to have their
awards renewed for four years. Presidential Scholars also receive admission
to the Honors Program. A cumulative GPA of 3.75 and a composite score of
30 on the ACT or 2000 on the SAT (all 3 scores) are the expected norms for
applicants. The Presidential Scholarship application deadline for fall

The Birdsong Spirit Award seeks to reward two South students involved
in community service. Two $250 awards will be given to individuals who
inspire the spirit of giving based on both their volunteer service and

Profile in Courage
Essay Contest
The contest is open to United States high school students in grades nine through
twelve attending public, private, parochial, or home schools. The winner of the
competitive annual contest is awarded a $10,000 prize and is invited to accept the
award at the Profile in Courage Award ceremony hosted each May by Caroline
Kennedy at the Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston. The student’s
nominating teacher receives a John F. Kennedy Public Service Grant in the amount
of $500 and is also invited to attend the Profile in Courage Award ceremony. A
second place winner receives $1,000 and up to five finalists each receive $500. Past
winners and finalists are not eligible to participate. Employees of John Hancock
Financial Services and members of their families are not eligible to participate.
Essays can be no more than 1,000 words. Citations and bibliography are not included in
the word count. Essays must be the original work of the student. John F. Kennedy,
Robert F. Kennedy, and Edward M. Kennedy are not eligible subjects for essays.

Program
Award of $10,000 per year for 4 years to a minimum of 10 students.
Applicants must be African-American seniors who exhibit academic
excellence, leadership, commitment to community service, and demonstrate
financial need. Application materials must be mailed in one packet.
Transcripts and letters of recommendation should not be sent under
separate cover. Incomplete, e-mailed or faxed applications will not be
considered.
The November 1st deadline will also be considered for the Ron Brown
Scholar Program AND forwarded to a select and limited number of additional

The Gerald R. Ford Scholarship is available to one student each year who
enrolls as a freshman after high school graduation, takes at least 15 credits
per semester, majors in business, technology or health, and attends the
W.A. Lettinga Campus in Grand Rapids. The scholarship covers the costs of
tuition, books, fees, study abroad, on-campus housing and meal plans.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholar Program is open to academically talented
students from ethnic and racial backgrounds that have been historically
underrepresented in American higher education. Scholars receive up to full

C-SPAN's STUDENTCAM
Scholarships for first-year students are available for piano, organ, voice,
winds (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, French horn,
trombone, euphonium, tuba), strings (violin, viola, cello, double bass), and
percussion. Students who are awarded a music scholarship are required to
take private lessons (in the area of the award) and participate in an
appropriate faculty-directed ensemble for the duration of their scholarships.

The National Honor Society Scholarship program is a nomination process.
Students cannot apply but must be nominated through their high school National
Honor Society chapter. Nomination forms cannot be sent to students or parents
but must be obtained through the high school NHS Chapter Adviser. If you are a

Society chapter, and wish to be considered for nomination, contact your local

C-SPAN's StudentCam is an annual national video documentary
competition that encourages students to think seriously about issues that
affect our communities and our nation. Students are asked to create a
short (5-8 minute) video documentary that responds to one of the topics
listed below. 75 student prizes will be awarded.

Since C-SPAN’s philosophy is to show varying sides of an issue, winning
StudentCam documentaries will provide the same treatment of their
selected topic.

compete for one of the Academic Departmental Chair Scholarships. An on-campus

The NFL Alumni – Detroit Chapter supports two $2,500 scholarships, one for
a male high school student athlete and one for a female high school student
athlete who reside in Wayne County. To be eligible you must have an
overall GPA of 3.5 or better, minimum score of 24 on ACT, senior status,
accepted to a 2 or 4 year college, nominated by a high school coach,
participated at the varsity level in athletics at least one year and has NOT
accepted any scholarship funds or grants to participate in college athletics.

high school, and plan to attend a Michigan public community/junior
college, four-year degree-granting institution, or vocational training
