Incoming freshmen with an ACT Math subscore of 25 or higher will be able to finish the pre-requisites at the Oxford campus in two academic years (2+2) with four full semesters. Incoming freshmen with an ACT Math subscore below 25 will be able to finish the pre-requisites on the Oxford campus in three academic years (3+2: see suggested first-year curriculum on page 2). The second phase of the program takes place on the UMMC campus in Jackson and consists of 24 months (2 years) of lecture, laboratory, demonstration and clinical course work. Class size is limited and acceptance into the program in Jackson, MS is on a competitive basis. Candidates are advised to contact other schools they might consider to determine which courses are required. Summer school is an option to decrease the heavier course load during the first-year fall semester. In order to qualify to take 300-level classes, students must have at least 30 credit hours. FINE ARTS include Music 103-105, Theatre 201, Dance 200, or Art History 101-202. HUMANITIES include African-American Studies, Classical Civilization, Philosophy, Religion, Southern Studies, Gender Studies, or Environmental Studies 101. COUN 301, 307, and 309 are independent study courses offered by UM (they are NOT classified as on-line classes). Admissions Information 1. UMMC School of Health-Related Professions gives strong preference to legal residents of Mississippi. Out-of-state applicants will be considered only if there are positions available after all qualified Mississippi applicants are accepted. In addition to the admission standards of the institution and the general admission requirements of the School of Health Related Professions, candidates seeking admission to the Dental Hygiene program, must: 2. Have completed a minimum of 57 semester hours of academic credit (exclusive of physical education, military science, dogmatic religion and vocational courses) from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning; 3. Have a minimum overall cumulative grade point average of 2.50 on a 4.00 scale (All grades, including failing grades and grades on repeat courses, are used to calculate pre-admissions grade point average.); 4. Provide evidence of 8 observation hours of 2 licensed dental hygienists in two separate clinical environments; 5. Complete interview and hands-on dexterity test; 6. Submit ACT test scores; 7. Complete 16 hours of the science pre-requisite courses and 24 of the non-science courses before the February 15 application deadline; and 8. Have a grade of “C” or better on all required courses. APPLYING to the DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM: Applications are accepted online only and must be submitted by February 15th of the applying year. Competitive applicants (average accepted GPA 3.30) will interview with the Dental Hygiene Admissions Committee, usually first week in March, with acceptance notification in April. The accepted class will begin registration in August of the same year.
