Write the following on the next black page in
your notebook.
TIAL (Today I am Learning) how physical
and human geography affect people,
places, and regions.
Warm Up
• Describe what it would be like to live in the rainforest (consider
climate, food, clothing, home, etc.).
• Describe what it would be like to live in the desert (consider climate,
food, clothing, home, etc.).
• Compare and contrast living in these 2 places.
Place
• All places have characteristics that give them
meaning and character and distinguish them
from other places on earth.
• Geographers describe places by their physical
and human characteristics.
Place
• Physical characteristics include such elements as animal life.
• Human characteristics of the landscape can be noted in architecture,
patterns of livelihood, land use and ownership, town planning, and
communication and transportation networks.
• Languages, as well as religious and political ideologies, help shape the
character of a place.
• Studied together, the physical and human characteristics of places
provide clues to help students understand the nature of places on the
earth.
Place is the
personality of
geography.
Region
• A region is an area that is defined by certain unifying characteristics.
• The unifying characteristics may be physical, human or cultural.
• Regions can change over time due to changes in climate, economic
conditions, accessibility of trade routes, and many other factors.
Region
• Geographers study how regions change to predict the needs of the
people and the effects on the environment.
• The theme of regions is important in terms of our learning to manage
the differences and similarities which allow our world to function as a
unit.
List the characteristics (physical and human) of
each place
Phoenix, AZ (Southwest US)
Boston, MA (Northeast US)
Phoenix, AZ (SW)
Boston, MA (NE)
Create a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting
these two regions based on the list we just created
Independent Activity
•You will create 2 travel posters which will
visually represent the different characteristics
of two sample places/regions. You can either
choose to represent Phoenix (Southwest US)
and Boston (Northeast US), or select any two
global cities that are in different regions. You
must include at least 3 defining characteristics
or the place on each poster.
