Define:
Magma – liquid rock underneath the surface
Lava – liquid rock on the surface.
Igneous rocks – form when magma or lava cools
Extrusive igneous rock – forms when lava quickly
cools on the surface forming no crystals or small
crystals.
Intrusive igneous rocks – forms when magma
under the surface cools slowly forming large
crystals.

Define
Sediment – rocks particles broken down and made by
weathering
Sedimentary rock – made when sediments become solid.
Clastic sedimentary rock – grains and pebbles form solid
rock
Chemical sedimentary rock – forms when minerals come
out of solution and settle on ocean floor
Organic sedimentary rock – forms from the remains of
once living things.

• What does metamorphic mean?
meta = changed
morphic = shaped

Define:
Foliated – when mineral grains flatten and line
up in layers of metamorphic rocks.
Nonfoliated – when mineral grains in
metamorphic rocks do not form layers
Contact metamorphism – magma heats rock
directly, but does not melt them
Regional metamorphism – magma heats rock
over a larger area, rock do not melt
