 What were nineteenth-century social attitudes toward women, children, and family?
 What is the purpose of the ambiguity at the end of the novel and how can we
support multiple interpretations of Edna’s final act?

Objectives:

 Discuss the impact of figurative language, symbolism, and imagery on the
meaning of the book.
