Classroom Goals:






To have each student become more confident in basic math skills
To build on prior knowledge and expand their knowledge of mathematics and its functions
To know a range of problem-solving strategies to use when encountering different problems
To enhance each student’s critical thinking skills
To be able to use cooperative(group) skills to help each student learn more effectively from their peers
To make important connections to our world
Standards (to be covered this year):
Ratios and Proportional Relationships: Students will understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve
problems.
The Number System: Students will apply and extend previous understanding of multiplication and division to divide
fractions by fractions. Students will compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples.
Students will apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.
Expressions and Equations: Students will apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic
expressions. Students will reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities. Students will represent and
analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables.
Geometry: Students will solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
Statistics and Probability: Students will develop understanding of statistical variability. Students will summarize and
describe the distribution of data.
Materials: Please have the students bring the following items with them to math class, unless they have been instructed otherwise.
Pencils/ extra lead
Erasers
Spiral notebook (for math only)
Paper—replace as needed
Grading Scale: This is how the grades in the classroom will be figured for the interim and final grades.
Individual Tests: 60%
Team Tests: 20%
Homework: 10%
Classroom Participation: 10%
Classroom Participation: Being positive, productive, and prepared for any in-class activity and/or group work
daily.Homework: The majority of the homework will come from the Review/Preview questions at the end of each
section in the student book, however, other homework may be assigned throughout the chapter. After completing the
homework at home, students should log on to http://www.cpm.org/students/homework/ to review answers in order to
be better prepared to ask questions and share the next day.
Team Tests: Assessment that uses teamwork and collaboration to review material covered within the chapter.
Individual Tests: Assessment that checks individual growth and progress over a chapter.
What does it mean to be in an ADVANCED class??
An ADVANCED math class covers the same standards as the regular math class but in quicker way. Sometimes
the students in the advanced class have mastered or will master math concepts quicker than students in a regular
class therefore they are put together in an accelerated class. The other reason that it is considered advanced is
because the level of difficulty for problems is also higher. The advanced students’ homework may be over the
same section as the regular students but their homework may involve more high-level thinking and problem
solving skills. They will work on some creative assignments as well. For example, they may create their own
word problems, or present problem solving skills to the class in a unique way. Also, they will have an
opportunity to have some extra experiences with math that the other classes will not.
What extra opportunities will an ADVANCED student have in
class?
The advanced math class will be able to have extra opportunity to do math activities because of the accelerated
pace. Some of these opportunities will be:
-Continental Math League
-Reading a class book: The Puzzling World of Winston Breen
-Working with the Gifted and Talented teacher, Mrs. Pellington, for many different critical thinking activities
What is expected of a student in an ADVANCED class?
Students in an advanced class will be expected to:
- be willing to try new ways to solve math problems
-attempt all problems given or activities given
- keep up with all assignments and projects given
- ask questions when needed
- be willing to work with other math students respectfully
-be creative with solutions
-study for math assessments
-be organized and have necessary materials
