President’s Message:
Happy New Year to all!!! Hope you are having a wonderful holiday season and have been able to spend time
with family and relax a bit. So here we are getting ready to start a new year…2015. Remember all the buildup
to “Y2K” and wondering if our computers would work…hahaha….can’t believe that was 15 years ago. But as
we start a new year and think about resolutions and new beginnings, here we are about to kick off a new
beginning with Lunafest becoming a new fundraiser for our club. Please be thinking about how you can help
with selling tickets, sponsorships, setting up, cleaning up and most importantly attending the event on April 18th
by sharing an evening of fellowship and good movies. I hope you are also looking forward to our upcoming
programs of “Wings Flights of Hope” and “Women and the Supreme Court” and how can we go wrong with
wine and chocolate for our new member recruitment program in February. Stay safe, stay warm and eat lots of
Christmas cookies….
Peace to you,
Bonnie
In the News:
“The Zonta Club of Jamestown raised money during its June Tour de Zonta Bicycle Rally.
Following its 16 Days of Activism Campaign, the organization donated $1,800 to the
Salvation Army ANEW Center along with a donation to Zonta International Strategies to end
Violence Against Women (ZISVAW).
The Zonta Club is an international service organization whose mission is to advance the
status of women locally and globally. For further information or to join the local chapter,
visit Zonta.org, Zonta-Jamestown.org or see their community page of Facebook.”
“Salvation Army Capt. John Merchant, left, and Bob Ostrom, Advisory Board President, right,
are seen with Jody Shely, Zonta Club board member, second from the left, as she presents a
check to Stacey Tanner, Salvation Army ANEW Center Program Manager.”
Of Interest:
The Zonta International Club in Jamestown assembled 480 birthing kits that will be sent to third world countries
to be used in obstetrical settings providing improved birthing practices for women and infants. The kits were
assembled at St. Timothy Church Route 430 in Bemus Point by volunteers of the Zonta Club using a "clean
technique".
The birthing kit contains a 3X3 foot sheet of new plastic, a pair of disposable clean gloves, a small cake of soap,
three cotton umbilical cord ties, gauze pads, and a new disposable razor blade. The plastic sheet provides a
clean area for the delivery of the infant, gloves provide another aseptic barrier protecting the newborn from
bacteria exposure, and of course the soap is used for the new mom, newborn and those helping with the
delivery. All items are donated or purchased by Zonta International Club of Jamestown with Service funds from
our local budget.
Thus far, 100's of the Jamestown club's birthing kits have been sent to Haiti, Honduras, Afghanistan, Nepal and
points East in Africa. A midwife in Honduras has benefitted from the kits for several years. The Zonta Club has
outfitted her practice with surgical scissors and other products for sterilizing the implements that may be used.
This initiative is now a Zonta International District 4 project, first introduced by a Zonta Club in Australia.
District 4 has sent over 10,000 kits to third world countries. The birthing kits are an effort to reduce infection
in the mother and baby with a goal to reduce infant and maternal mortality.
Don’t Forget:
It is that time of the year to be thinking about nominations for the Woman of the
Yearpresentation by the Interclub Council, of which Zonta is one of 15 clubs. Attached is
information to help with criteria, etc, of which voluntary service is a significant factor.
Each club is requested to submit only 1 nominee and it is kept a secret. As Co-Chairs of
Interclub Council, Ann Powers and Jody Shely will be collecting the nominees from club
members. It does not have to be a Zontian, but we have a history of wonderful past
recipients like Mary Rappole and Marcia Bliss! Here are key dates:
Jan 31 – have nominee name and information to Ann or Jody
Feb 28 – Ann and Jody will present 1 nominee on behalf of Zonta to the Interclub Council
March 16 – Woman of the Year presentation at the Marvin House – so Save the Date!
Any questions please let me know.
And remember…it’s a secret!
Thanks, Bonnie
