Lesson 2 – God Speaks Through Jesus
INTRODUCTION - Clean
1► (Play a quick game of “Simon Says” or “Follow the Leader.”)
Great job! To play the game you had to listen carefully to
my voice and watch closely to see what I did. You had to be
able to see me and listen to me to play the game.
PROGRESSION OF EVENTS
2►Last week you learned that we can know things
about who God is by seeing and studying the things He has
made. But we still can’t see God or hear His voice. So God
sent someone to Earth who could be seen and heard so we
can know even more about God.
3►About 2,000 years ago an angel from God came to
a young woman named Mary, who was engaged to a man
named Joseph. (Point to “The Savior has come!” on the
Time Line.) 4►He told her she was going to have a baby
and He would be God’s Son. This baby boy would not have
a human father like you and I have. God would be this
baby’s Father. Who was the father of that baby? (Allow a
child to answer – God.) This child would be God the Son.
Blue 1
6►God the Son being born of a human woman would
be a miracle—something only God can do. (Repeat
definition together.) God planned for Mary to be Jesus’
mother while He was living on Earth and Joseph would care
for Jesus as a father, even though Jesus’ real Father would
be God in Heaven. (Read Luke 1:31 “You will become
pregnant and give birth to a son. You must call Him Jesus.
NIRV) 7►Mary was to name the baby Jesus, which means
“the Lord saves.” What does Jesus’ name mean? (Have
children say together – “the Lord saves.”) This name told
Mary and Joseph what Jesus would do one day—save all the
people of the world. But what do we need to be saved from?

5►God is sometimes called the Trinity.1 He is one
God in three persons: God the Father, God the Son and
God the Holy Spirit. We’ll talk about the Holy Spirit next
week. God the Son, the second person of the Trinity, would
come to Earth in a human body. He would be all God and
all man in one! Because He was God, He would be perfect.
Because He was man, He would experience everything that
you and I experience like happiness, sadness, hunger, and
tiredness. God was willing to come to Earth as a human to
show you, me, and everyone in the world that He loves us
very much! (Read John 3:16a “For God so loved the
world...” KJV) He would do this because He is God the Son.

8►You and I are born needing to be saved from sin.
Sin is going your way instead of going God’s way.
(Read Romans 3:23a “For all have sinned…” KJV)
Everyone on Earth has sinned. That includes you and me.
When you disobey your parents or have a bad attitude, it is
sin. Taking something that is not yours because you think
you can get away with it is sin. Because God is holy and
just, sin has to be punished. The punishment for sin that isn’t
forgiven is to be separated from God now on Earth and
forever because God cannot be around sin. That is why
every person in the world needs to be saved.
9►Jesus’ name gave a hint of what He would do—
save people from their sin. Even Mary needed to be saved
from her sin.
10►The Bible tells us that Mary was surprised and a
little afraid! But she chose to obey God. Her life would be
completely changed. How would she explain to Joseph that
God was this baby’s Father? In all of human history this had
never happened before!
11►God sent an angel to tell Joseph that Mary would
have a baby and the baby would be God’s Son. God had a
very special job for Mary and Joseph—they would raise
God’s Son. 12►These two ordinary people had a part in
God’s plan to save the world from sin. That plan was bigger
than either of them could imagine. God Himself was coming
to Earth as a baby! It must have been a scary time for them,
but Mary and Joseph trusted God and knew that obeying
Him was best.

13►Just before Jesus was born, Mary and Joseph had
to travel to Bethlehem for a census. (Place Bethlehem on the
Bible Map2.) During a census everyone had to go to their
hometowns to be counted so the government knew how
many people lived in their country.
14►While they were in Bethlehem, the time came for
God’s Son to be born! But so many people had come to
town that there was no room for them anywhere. They had
nowhere to stay! Finally, Mary and Joseph found one
place—a stable—which is a place where animals were kept.
(Read Luke 2:7 “She gave birth to her first baby. It was a
boy. She wrapped him in large strips of cloth. Then she put
him in a manger. That’s because there was no guest room
where they could stay.” NIRV) Jesus—God Himself in
human form—was born in a stable.
15►Jesus left His wonderful home in Heaven to
come to Earth and be born in a stable. (Point to “The Savior
has come!” on the Time Line.) Can you imagine God
leaving all the beauty of Heaven where He was King and
choosing to become a helpless baby born to a poor family on
a sinful Earth? Why did God do this? It is because of His
love for the people He created. When God sent Jesus to
Earth, He was saying that He loves you and wants you to
know Him. Word Up! God speaks through Jesus!3
16►As Jesus grew up He worked with Joseph, who
was a carpenter. Jesus learned how to make all kinds of
things. Maybe He made tables and chairs and other
furniture. Let’s pretend to build a piece of furniture. (Do
with children.) On the count of three, shout out what kind of
furniture you made. One, two, three! (Allow response.) Jesus
grew from being a boy to a man.

17►People were amazed that Jesus knew so much about God.
As an adult Jesus taught many people about God and did many
miracles. Who remembers what miracles are? (Allow response.)
Let’s say our definition together: 18►A miracle is something
that only God can do. That’s right, things only God can do. He
made blind people see and crippled people walk. Jesus even
raised people from the dead! Many people followed Jesus and
learned from Him.
Did you know we can learn from Jesus and become
His followers today? 19►If you have already said “I
trust in Jesus as my Savior,” you can also say “I can follow
Jesus.”4 The Holy Spirit will help you do that. (Read 1 Pet. 2:21
“You were chosen to do good even if you suffer. That’s
because Christ suffered for you. He left you an example
that he expects you to follow.” NIRV) Think of all the
things Jesus went through for you. 20►He left His beautiful
home in Heaven to live on Earth. He suffered and died on
the cross. All of it was for you! You can say thank You to
Jesus by letting Him show you how to live. The Bible calls
that being one of His followers. 21►In Matthew, Mark,
Luke and John you can read about how Jesus listened to and
obeyed God His Father. Jesus wants His followers to listen
to God and obey Him too. Word Up! God speaks through
Jesus! We are to live like Jesus did. Jesus loved all people.
He loved the people in the world who no one else liked. He
ate with sinners and cared for people who others didn’t want
to be around. You can live like Jesus by loving people who
no one else likes. Maybe you could sit by someone who is sitting
alone at lunch. With your parents’ permission, you could invite
someone over to play who is often left out. It might be hard but
God the Holy Spirit will help you. Will you say “I can follow
Jesus” and learn from Him?

22►Many people followed Jesus and learned from
Him. Jesus told them how He had come to Earth so they
could know God. He showed the people that He is God’s
Son. (Place “God speaks through Jesus” 5 on the Time
Line.) He even told His followers… (read John 14:9b
“Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.”). 23►But
some people did not believe Jesus. They got so angry when
Jesus said He is God that they wanted to kill Him.
Was Jesus lying about being God? (Allow response.)
No! He really is God. But not everyone believed Him, not
even those closest to Him. One night the disciple Judas led
soldiers to Jesus to arrest Him. 24►After He was arrested,
Jesus was sentenced to die. Evil men beat Jesus, spit on him,
made fun of Him and put a sharp crown of thorns on His
head. 25►They took Him to a hill outside the city and
nailed His hands and feet to a cross. Jesus suffered on the
cross for about six hours. Many people had gathered to
watch. Some people were there because they loved Him, but
others hated Him and kept making fun of Him. Finally Jesus
said, “It is finished!” and He died.
Why did Jesus have to die? Wasn’t He supposed to
save the world from sin?
26►After Adam and Eve sinned, God promised the
Savior would come and take away the people’s sin
(point to “God promises a Savior” on the Time Line).
27►When the evil men beat Jesus and put nails in His
hands and feet, blood came out of His body. He paid for sin
once and for all. Even as Jesus died on the cross, He showed
us what God is like. Jesus showed us that God loves us by
taking our punishment of sin upon Himself so we could live
with Him forever.

(Read 1 John 4:14 “…the Father has sent his Son to be
the Savior of the world.” ESV) He could have stopped them
from killing Him because He has all power. Jesus could
have walked away but this was part of God’s plan. Jesus
came to Earth to die for you. That is how much He loves
you. 28►Word Up! God speaks through Jesus! Through
Jesus, God speaks to us and tells us about His love. Because
God loved you, He sent His Son to die for you.
But Jesus died. That’s not a very happy ending, is it?
Well, I have great news for you! The story does not end with
Jesus on the cross. 29►Jesus was buried and on the third
day some of His followers went to the grave. Let’s talk to
one of them. Her name is Mary Magdalene.
Mary Magdalene Monologue6
31► “I’ll never forget that awful day Jesus died. He was the
first person who ever cared about me…and then they killed
Him. I remembered His words. He taught us to live for God
the Father. After He was buried, I went with my friends to
take some spices to the tomb. When we got there the huge
stone that covered the grave had been rolled away. Jesus was
gone! I thought someone had stolen His body. How could
they do that? Wasn’t it bad enough they killed Him? Now
this! But when I went inside the cave where He had been
buried, I saw two angels in shining clothes. They said, ‘He is
not here, for He is risen.’ We ran to tell the disciples. Some
of them didn’t believe us, but Peter and John ran to see this
for themselves. Later, I came back to the grave. I still wasn’t
sure what to think. There was a man there but I didn’t
recognize who it was. I thought He was the gardener. But
then He said my name, and I knew who it was! 32►It was
Jesus! He was alive. He IS alive!” Go to Pink

CLIMAX
Jesus came alive again! And He’s alive today!
CONCLUSION
33►Many people saw Jesus after He had come back
to life—even 500 people at one time! 34►Before Jesus
went back into Heaven, He promised He would come back
one day for everyone who believes in Him. The Bible tells
us that Jesus… (read Hebrews 10:12b “sat down at the
right hand of God.” ESV) Right now Jesus is in Heaven in a
place of honor at the Father’s right hand because He is God
the Son.
INVITATION7
35►Do you believe Jesus is God the Son? Jesus died
and came alive again so you would not have to be
separated from God but have new life in Him. The Bible
tells us…

(Read John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave
his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not
perish but have eternal life.” ESV) When you believe
(trust) in Jesus, being willing to turn from sin, you will have
life forever with God. Here on Earth, God will be with you
to help you live for Him and understand His Word. And
when your life on Earth is over, you will go to Heaven and
be with God forever and ever. Will you believe in Jesus as
your only Savior from sin?
36►Please close your eyes. If you believed in Jesus
to save you today for the first time or if you have questions
about that, would you show me by standing up? (Allow
response.) Everyone may open their eyes. If you stood up
please meet me (designate time and location). I would like
to show you from God’s Word what it means to believe in
Jesus and live His way.
37►Link to Fixin’ My Eyes on You: To be able to follow
Jesus, His children need to keep focused on what God says
in His Word. Another way to say that is to keep your eyes
fixed on Jesus. We’re going to sing a song about that.
