She is very head strong, a protector of her brother, and a fast runner. The other characters are Gretchen, Cynthia, Mary Louise, Rosie and Mr. Pearson. Hazel has a conflict with Gretchen because she is new in town and her new competition. Next, Hazel has a problem with phony people. That would include Cynthia, Mary Louise, and Rosie. The short story mostly takes place in Harlem, New York during the May Day Celebration. Raymond is another character that is important and he is Hazel’s brother. She has to protect him because he is mentally disabled.
