“Make a Roman” – Clothing & Names Project
OBJECTIVES
Create a paper Roman “mini-you” based upon your citizenship status and your role
in the Familia Romana to which you belong in your Latin class.
CLI.CUIA: Demonstrate an understanding of the roman nomenclature system as it relates
to family structure.
CLI.CU2A: Demonstrate an understanding of proper Roman attire as it relates to family,
social and political structure.
DIRECTIONS
 Create your full, legal Roman name based on your relationship with the pater
familias in your family (txtbk Pg. 84). For the sake of this project, all family slaves
are freedmen. Fill in the blanks below and consider the following questions:
 How many names should my Roman have?
 Where does each part of my name come from?
 What does each part of my name mean about me?

Clothe your Roman based on the information on Pg. 17 and the culture notes from
class. Choose one of the following:
 You may color over the outline, but you must completely conceal the body of
the outline.
 You may design and cut out a complete, appropriate, set of clothing for your
Roman from paper. Glue the wardrobe to your cut out.

Write a personal narrative about your Roman in one to two paragraphs. Include
your age and position in the family. Explain your name (what each one means, how
you came to receive it and why) and how/why your wardrobe is appropriate to your

Grading Rubric:
Roman Name:
 The student correctly names their Roman based upon age,
gender, family and social/political status.
 The student correctly identifies and correctly explains all
parts of their Roman name using the Latin vocabulary
(praenomen, nomen, cognomen).
Roman Clothing:
 The student dresses their Roman correctly according to
gender, family and social/political status (original body
outline is not visible through clothing).
 The student includes all possible clothing items for their
Roman.
 The student creates a wardrobe using authentic colors
appropriate for Ancient Rome (they did not have “neons”,
“brights”, “hots”, etc. and do not use yellow).
 The student correctly identifies and explains all parts of
their Roman wardrobe (using the Latin vocabulary) and draws
a clear connection from the wardrobe item to its
social/political significance.
