Makeup Assignments for Theatre I
Unit 1 – Music Pantomime
In a 1 page typed paper, take a song of your choice and describe how you would perform it if it were a play. Be sure to include the characters,
problem and conclusion. A copy of the song must be provided via CD or google share.
Unit 2 – Puppet Performance
In a 2 page typed paper, compare and contrast how puppetry is used in Indonesia and how it is used in Western (American) theatre and television
(Sesame Street, War Horse, etc.).
Unit 3 – Foundations of Performance
In a 2 page typed paper, describe the blocking for your scene and explain why that blocking is appropriate for each character and his/her
emotional state.
Unit 4 – Mask Performance
In a 2 page typed paper, compare and contrast how masks were used in Greek times and how they are used in Western (American) theatre and
television (Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, etc.).
Unit 5 – Monologue
No alternate assignment – student may perform monologue at any time or record it and submit it to the instructor.
Unit 6 – Film
In a 2 page typed paper, describe how film has change from its conception to modern day film making techniques. Be sure to include information
about how the acting has changed as well.
Unit 7 – Duet Scene
In a 2 page typed paper, describe the blocking for your scene and explain why that blocking is appropriate for each character and his/her
emotional state.
Unit 8 – Improvisation Performance
In a 2 page typed paper, explain why improvisation is an important skills to the modern actor. Be sure to include at least 2 sources and a
minimum of 3 reasons.
Unit 9 – Original Script
Student can complete this assessment on his/her own as necessary using the guidelines provided in the unit.
Unit 10 – Restoration/Romanticism/Realism
No alternate assignment necessary – only a written test for this unit.
Unit 11 – Makeup
In a 2 page typed paper, compare and contrast how makeup is used in Kabuki and in modern theatrical productions. Be sure to include
information on color and character.
Unit 12 – Playwrights (Scene Performance)
In a 1 page typed paper, describe the blocking for your scene and explain why that blocking is appropriate for each character and his/her
emotional state.
Unit 13 – Film Criticism
No alternate assignment necessary – student can complete the film criticism assignment at any time on their own
Unit 14 – Large Group Scene (Performance)
In a 4 page typed paper, give a detailed explanation of a famous one act playwright (Ives, Mamet, Durang, etc). Be sure to include biographical
information, descriptions of 3 of their most popular one acts and information on their writing style/genre . On page 4 write what you would have
done if you had been there for the performance and describe the rehearsal process.
Unit 15 – Choreography
In as many words as necessary, write out the choreography for a song of your choice (3-4 minutes in length). Be sure to include a description of
each movement. A copy of the song must be provided via CD or google share.
