The Glass Menagerie by William Tennessee
Scene Writing Final Assignment
Your task is to write an addition scene for Tennessee William’s play The Glass
Menagerie. You can choose one of the following scenarios for your scene:
1. Write a scene prior to scene 1. Write about a context prior to the play. This
could be Laura’s time in high school, Amanda’s time in Blue Mountain, Life
before their father left, etc. If you choose this option, it is important that you stay
true to the context of the play. In other words, it must be logical and be consistent
with development of the rest of the play.
2. Write a “filler scene” in between two already existing scenes. If you choose
this option, it is very important that your scene flows logically between the prior
and post scenes. For example, you could write a scene about Tom at the movies,
Laura when she is supposed to be at Business College, Tom and Jim at the
warehouse, etc.
3. Write a scene post scene 7. Write about a context post play. Once again, it is
important that you stay true to the context of the play. If you choose this option,
you scene must be conclusive. In other words, your scene should function as an
alternative ending. For example, Laura and Amanda’s reaction to Tom leaving,
what happens to Tom when he leaves, etc.
Requirements:
1. You must incorporate at least two symbols that we have seen within the play.
(Ex. Glass menagerie, unicorn, Blue Roses, the fire escape, the phonograph
records, the movies, seventeen gentleman callers, the hanging photograph of the
father, etc.)
2. You must include a minimum of three out of the four characters.
3. You must specify the context of the scene. (Ex. Where it falls within the play.
Prior to scene 1, in between two scenes, or after the final scene.)
4. You MUST include stage directions – a minimum of 150 words of stage
directions.
5. Your scene must range from 550-850 words.
6. If possible, I would prefer this assignment typed. I am aware that some students
may not have access to a computer/laptop at home, so if you are handwriting your
script, please try and write neatly. 
