Action Verb – Physical
Tells the action the subject is doing; clearly visible
Action Verb – Mental or Ownership
Tells the action the subject is doing; not visible
State of Being Verbs
Verbs that don’t express action. Tell the state the subject is in.
Connect the subject to information about it.

Helping Verbs & Verb Phrases
Verbs that help express action/state of being of subjects
Verb phrase contains one main verb and one or more helping verbs

may, might, must, can, could, shall, should, will, would
Linking Verbs
Verbs that link subjects with words that describe or rename the subject
Lots of linking verbs. Some commonly used LV’s: is, are, am, was, been, being,
smell, sound, appear, seems, taste, feel, look, etc.
Also, several combinations of the above can be used as linking verbs.
Transitive/Intransitive Verbs
Transitive verbs are verbs that take an object. The action of the verb happens
to a who or a what. Ask Who? or What? the verb happened to
to decide if it’s transitive.
Intransitive verbs are action verbs without a direct object.
Action verbs can be transitive or intransitive depending on how they’re used
in the sentence.
