Mega Toy of the Mega Wealthy
The way that many of the world’s billion-aires spend their money is a constant source of wonder, and one in par-ticular
has made quite a splash with his unique [yoo-nēk] pleasure boat.
The Russian business-man [biz-nis-man] is the owner of a yacht [yot] that simply has the name of ‘A’. While not the biggest private
boat on the seas (it’s a mere 119m long), it is probably the most different. Not only is it shaped almost like a submarine, but its
interior is not the usual wood, carpet and wallpaper. Instead it looks more like an expensive city apart-ment, with lots of mirrors
and white surfaces and polished silver.
In true billionaire style, there is no shortage of mind-bogglingly expensive items, such as a $US60 000 banister on the spiral
staircase and bath taps that cost $US40 000 each.
It’s also not cheap to run, requiring a crew of at least 35, and costing more
than $US20 million a year to maintain. Just to fill the gas tanks for the two huge
engines costs $US500 000.

Food for Serious Thought
Just to keep our feet on the ground, here are some statistics that really raise some chal-lenging moral questions about the
idea of spending $US300 million on a private yacht [yot]. .
It is estimated that 25% of the world’s wealth [welЋ] lies in the hands of fewer than 0.15% of the popu-lation. However, in stark
contrast to the life of this handful of mega-wealthy people, it is disturbing to realise that almost half of the world’s three billion
inhabitants are currently surviving on less than $US2.50 per day, and 80% have a daily income of less than $US10.
According to UNICEF, one billion of the world’s 2.2 billion children live in poverty, which is defined as being “deprived of
nutrition, water and sani-tation facilities, access [ak-ses] to basic health-care services, shelter, education, participation and protection”. And as a result of this lack of the basic needs of life, 24 000 children die each day.
The problem though [thō] is not the lack of resour-ces to address these basic needs, but in their very uneven distribution. However,
history has also shown at least two things. The first is that if the rich get too rich and the poor get too poor, the poor will eventually
revolt and overthrow the existing order of their society. The second is that simply tak-ing from the rich to give to the poor does
not solve the problem.
Managing the many highly complex issues [i-shooz] surrounding poverty will present one of man-kind’s greatest challenges in the
years ahead.

What’s in a Name?

made
the
news, but maybe you, like us, may have noticed one very unusual

thing – no one calls it by its name.
This is perhaps not surprising, as in Icelandic it is spelt Eyjafjallajökull, which means “island moun-tain glacier”.
However, if you think the spelling is hard, wait till you get to the pro-nunciation. The closest phonetic spelling we could find
suggested we say “Aye-ya-fyah-dla-jow-kudl”, but to be honest, when we tried, it simply sounded like someone choking on a
mouthful of way-too-hot chilli pepper.
We did find a video on the net of an Icelandic translator giving some newsreaders a pronuncia-tion lesson. But despite this, we
still reckon you’d have more chance of paddling safely across its crater in a canoe than of correctly saying its name.

Online Air Traffic Control Data
ith flights starting up again across Europe [ū-rip], one site worth a visit allows you to track the real time movement of
planes across the continent, in a way similar to that of a real aircraft controller.
Flight Radar 24 uses the actual transponder information being sent from each plane, and shows its current location with a small
yellow symbol.
Click on a particular symbol, and a whole [höl] bunch of information suddenly appears. This includes a line showing the route
[root] the plane has just flown along, the type of plane it is, the airline it belongs to, the airport it left and the one it is going to, its
registra-tion and flight numbers, its current location and altitude, and even its current ground speed. If that is not enough [ē-nuf] for
you, you can even get the recent flight history of that particular plane.

An Open Invitation
Speaking of aviation, Air New Zealand is currently running an interesting design [dē-zīn] competition, open to all, and with
great prizes. . There are four different categories, and the winner of each will get a free return trip for two from Auckland to
London. No problem if you live else-where in the world – the
airline will first fly you there to catch the flight. .
There are four different categories – one for invent-ing an original in-flight
snack, one for creating [krē-ā-tēng] an original cocktail (which does not have to be alcoholic), one for designing a unique [yoo-nēk] eye [ī]
mask, and one that is not about designing but about presenting ideas, which requires that you submit a video.
We’d encourage [en-ku-rij] you to have a look at this competition, as there is something everyone can do.

A Canny Idea
T
he link below to the American charity Canstruction is also well worth a visit.
It shows how teams led by architects [ar-ki-tekt/s] and engineers showcase their talents by creating giant sculptures made out of
canned foods. At the close of each exhibition, all the tins that have been used are then donated to food banks. Everybody gets to
win, as products and services are advertised, and many needy people are assisted.
