Elizabeth High School: Chemistry
2015-2016
Course: Chemistry
Instructor: Ashley Pollard
Contact Information:
Email: apollard@esdk12.org
Office Hours: Before/After School; planning periods; or by appointment.
If you need help or have a question outside of school hours, please email me.
Materials: Each student will need to have the following for use during class every day.
1. 3 ring binder with filler paper or a bound notebook
2. Pen/Pencil
3. Calculator (a non-graphing calculator will do just fine.)
Course Objectives: Provide an introduction to the physical structure of matter, periodic table, chemical
reactions, bonding, stoichiometry, and its application to life.
Class Format: A “flipped” classroom format is defined as a class that does what has been traditionally
thought to be classwork as homework, and what has been traditionally thought to be homework as
classwork. The rationale behind the flipped classroom is to allow students the opportunity to ask
questions and get help while practicing their work, something they aren’t able to do at home in a
traditional class format. Students will get a chance to master the concepts with more one-on-one
teacher attention time and through class group collaboration. You must use your school email account
for all student/teacher communication, use of the google classroom, moodle, and completion of online
quizzes.
Expectations: My expectations for every student can be summed up in two words: RESPECT and
EFFORT. I expect you to respect yourself, respect your teachers and respect your classmates while
giving 100% effort towards mastery of Science. Disregard for any of the above will not be tolerated.
Examples of disregard might be profanity, use of undesignated electronics other than calculators
during tests, or distracting yourself or others. Maximum effort means being on time (Note: a tardy is if
you are not in your seat ready to learn when the bell rings), bringing your materials to class every day,
doing work assigned, taking good notes, and studying for assessments.
Absences: If you are absent please be aware that your homework is due as all assignments
are posted online for you to access. The only exception to this is labs and tests, which must be made
up as soon as possible. If you miss the day of the test for any reason you must make up the test with
in two full school days, after this time the test score will be recorded as a zero. You will be allowed to
take the test however the zero will remain in place until the test is taken.
Grades:
Your semester grade with be approx. 30% Homework, 30% Projects and 40% Tests including
your midterm/final exam.
Tests: If you receive less than a 50% on a test you are welcome to retake the test within 5 school
days of the assigned test date.
Lab Rules:
Lab rules will be covered in the first few days of class, and will be reviewed before each lab or
activity. Everyone must pass the lab safety test with a 90% before they may take part in any lab or
activity. These rules are in place for the safety of everyone in the classroom. Violation of the lab
rules will result in immediate removal from the classroom and a zero grade for the lab or activity and a
visit with the administration.
Classroom Rules:
1. Respect each other and yourself.
2. Always give me your best effort.
3. Lab Rules must be followed at all times.
4. No food, water or gum in the science classroom, if I see it goes in the trash.
