This was an obvious community need and my time was well spent fulfilling this need. I spent each Tuesday afternoon with five students ages 9,8,8,6, and 6. I feel that the skill I developed during this project was initiative. It was necessary for me to develop this because there was not a clear laid out plan for tutoring at this school. I also realized very quickly that youth at these ages look up to college students and I tried very hard to set a good example. I feel the best thing I did during this experience was mentoring (sharing study tips I learned in college that I wish I had known from the beginning). One of the challenges I met immediately was that each student needed help in individual areas, and I had to find their weak points and then help them improve. I was able to help each improve in the areas they needed. Value in my community is more than I ever thought. My 10 hours provided so much to those students. This Service Learning project changed me in that I realize now that as an individual I can make a big difference. When this project was assigned I was resentful that as a self employed, mother of a 4 year old, and student, I was asked to take on even more. Now I come away with a completely different attitude. I will always find time to volunteer, especially at the public schools in my area. 8 How Service-Learning enhanced learning and understanding of the course material: Student engaged in Planning and executing the tutoring program for this group of students. Student experienced the fact that individuals require different types and degrees of motivation. Student was engaged with coaching, mentoring and training. 9
